Year 1/2 Community Update

Over the past two weeks, students have been engaged in learning across Literacy, Content, and Mathematics.

In Literacy, students have been exploring narrative texts through our Author Study on Mem Fox. We have read a range of her stories, including Possum Magic and I Am Australian Too, and used these texts to learn what makes a good story. Students have been identifying characters and describing both their outside traits (what they look like) and their inside traits (how they feel and act).

A strong focus has also been placed on building comprehension skills. Students have been learning to visualise by creating pictures in their mind, predict meaning using clues from the text, and make simple inferences by using images and their own experiences to understand ideas that are not directly stated.

As part of Harmony Week, students revisited I Am Australian Too and explored the idea of multiculturalism. We discussed how everyone has different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences, and how this makes our community stronger and more inclusive.

To celebrate this learning, each student created a handprint and added their name to a leaf on our display in the welcome area. The leaf is an important symbol for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, representing connection to the land, growth, and life. This activity supported students to understand the importance of respect, identity, and belonging.

In Content (Geography), students have been learning about maps and how they help us understand places. They created simple maps of familiar places such as the classroom, school, or their bedroom, using a bird’s-eye view. Students included key features like furniture and doors, and began using symbols to create a simple map key.

In Mathematics, students have continued developing their understanding of addition and subtraction. They have also been building their knowledge of statistics by counting collections, creating simple graphs, and describing what they notice about the data. Students are learning to explain their thinking using clear and simple sentences.

It has been wonderful to see students showing curiosity, building confidence, and trying their best in all areas of their learning.
