Kindness and Belonging

Strengthening our Connections

It has been wonderful to see the playground buzzing with energy again with the students enjoying some amazing autumn weather and sunshine! While the first week back is often filled with the excitement of seeing friends, Week 2 is traditionally when we see students truly settling back into their social grooves.

After a two-week break, social dynamics can sometimes feel a little "rusty." We often find that playground friction—those small disagreements over game rules or who is sitting where—tends to crop up as children re-negotiate their places within peer groups.

The Power of "Small Acts"

This week, our wellbeing focus has been helping students with Kindness and Belonging. We are teaching our students that a sense of belonging isn't just something that happens; it’s something we actively build for each other through small, intentional acts of inclusion.

When we focus on being "includers," we create a safety net that prevents minor misunderstandings from turning into major playground issues.

Social bonds are like muscles—they need gentle exercise to stay strong. To support your child in re-establishing their school connections this week, you might like to try these conversation starters over dinner:

"Who did you notice doing something kind today?" (This shifts their focus from their own needs to the positive actions of others).

"Was there anyone who looked like they needed a friend today? How could we help them feel included tomorrow?"

"What is one rule in your favorite playground game that everyone needs to agree on to keep it fair?"

A Note on Resilience

It is normal for children to experience a few "bumps" in the playground as they settle back in. Our goal isn't to remove every conflict, but to give our students the tools to navigate them with kindness. By focusing on inclusion now, we set the tone for a harmonious and connected Term 2.
