Why was the pencil feeling confident?
Because he was looking sharp!
It’s been a busy start in the Visual Arts room as we revisit classroom routines, studio practices and our shared art language. Students have been strengthening their understanding of the Elements of Art and building confidence in using creative vocabulary to describe and reflect on their work — all setting us up for an exciting year ahead.
Here’s what each year level worked on to celebrate Valentine's Day earlier in the month:
Foundation:
Students created warm and cool coloured heart collages for Valentine’s Day. They explored colour theory by designing and carefully cutting heart shapes, then adding contrasting warm or cool backgrounds to make their artwork stand out.

Year One:
Year One students created vibrant rainbow heart artworks, focusing on shape and colour. They practised drawing a bold heart outline and used paint sticks to apply rainbow rays, exploring line and colour relationships.

Year Two:
Students created woven heart artworks using painted paper strips. They explored pattern, colour and paper weaving techniques while developing careful cutting, folding and fine motor skills.

Year Three:
Year Three explored line, shadow and colour to create 3D optical illusion hearts. Using markers, water and salt techniques, students experimented with colour blending and visual depth.

Year Four:
Inspired by artist Jen Stark, students created layered “drip” heart artworks. They explored bold colour, radiating lines and 3D effects using puffy paint to create dynamic, eye-catching designs.

Year Five & Six:
Senior students created Basquiat-inspired heart and crown artworks. Using bold lines, layered colour and personal symbolism, they explored identity, self-expression and visual impact through a limited colour palette.
