Community Launch: Welcome to Country & Smoking Ceremony

Last week, Balambalam Primary School was honoured to begin our first year with a deeply meaningful Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, performed by Uncle Shane Clarke of the Bunurong Land Council. The ceremony was held in the heart of our school grounds, where students, staff and families gathered as a new community to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land upon which our school stands.
Uncle Shane shared stories and insights that helped us understand the deep history and enduring spirit of this place. The gentle smoke from the smoking ceremony, created using native plants, drifted across our gathering, cleansing people and place to promote wellbeing and connection. For our community in attendance, it was a powerful experience that fostered a sense of unity and respect.
This ceremony reminded us all of the importance of caring for Country and for each other, setting a thoughtful and inclusive tone for the term ahead. We extend our sincere thanks to Uncle Shane for his generous guidance and for helping our school community walk forward with greater awareness and respect.
