Helping Your Child Adjust During the First Weeks of School

Starting a new school year can be exciting, but it can also feel stressful or overwhelming for some children. The first few weeks are often when nerves are highest. Here are some ways you can support your child at home and school.

Talk & Listen

  • Ask your child how they feel about school and listen without judgment.
  • Validate their feelings: “It’s normal to feel nervous — everyone feels that sometimes.”
  • Share positive memories about school to model calm confidence.

Keep Routines Predictable

  • Gradually adjust bedtimes and morning routines before school begins.
  • Consistent routines help children feel safe and prepared.

Foster Social Connections

  • Encourage reconnecting with friends or making new ones.
  • Arrange brief playdates or meet-ups before school starts.
  • Discuss ways to ask for help or join in class activities.

Encourage Small Wins

  • Practice morning tasks together (packing backpack, choosing clothes).
  • Celebrate small successes to build confidence.
  • Praise effort as much as achievement.

Teach Simple Coping Strategies

  • Deep breathing, stretching, or mindfulness exercises can help calm nerves.
  • Create a “worry box” for your child to write or draw concerns.

Communicate with School Staff

  • Let teachers know if your child is anxious or struggling.
  • Teachers can provide extra reassurance and monitor your child during the transition.

Stay Calm & Supportive

  • Children notice parents’ emotions.
  • Model calm, confident behaviour to help your child feel safe.

Remember: A little nervousness in the first few weeks is normal. If anxiety is intense, persistent, or affects daily functioning, contact our school for additional support.

Rochester Primary School…. Building Relationships

As we kick off the new school year, we’ve dedicated a significant portion of the first few weeks to building relationships, engaging in “getting to know you” activities, and participating in team games. This approach sets the tone for a positive and supportive learning environment where every student feels valued, heard, and connected.

The first weeks are essential for establishing trust and camaraderie among students, teachers, and staff. By engaging in fun and interactive activities, students begin to understand each other’s strengths, interests, and personalities.

By prioritizing relationships and teamwork early on, we are creating a safe and engaging atmosphere where students can thrive, grow, and learn together. We look forward to seeing how these connections will enhance the rest of the year!
