Year 1

Spotlight on Learning

Jerusalem Community

Dear Families,

Welcome to Year 1 Term 1 in 2026. The students have settled well into established routines, like lining up and walking around the school in roll order. The students have a big year ahead of them following the expectations of safety, respect and learning. The smooth transition back to school routines have them well placed to have a successful year at St Thomas.

A big thank you to all parents who remembered to send in hats and fruit for the first week back. Students have grown over the summer therefore they may need more fruit or snacks in their lunch boxes..

The Jerusalem team are looking forward to having a great term with the new Year 1 students.

Warm regards,

The Jerusalem Community Team

Important Reminders

  1. Term 1 is a SunSmart term and 'No hat, no play', please ensure your child has their hat for school.
  2. All students are expected to wear full St Thomas’ school uniform — either summer, or PE is fine, but it must be the official school uniform.
  3. Reading daily is a big factor in academic progression. Students should read everyday to a parent or family member to increase their word/sound knowledge.
  4. Please ensure students eat breakfast before they arrive at school. Lunchboxes should include fruit or vegetables and lunch to fuel students for learning throughout the day.

This week:

Literacy-Phonics - This week we revised our Stage 6 sounds from the Little Learners Love Literacy sequence. Students practiced these previously taught sounds through our whole class Daily Review and in small reading groups.

Literacy- Writing - This week we read and wrote responses to  "A Year on Our Farm" by Penny Matthews and Andrew Mclean.  This book pairs well with our integrated topic geography as it talks about different places. It also shows the  environmental changes of seasons as well as the social, emotional and physical growth of a family that live a very different life on a farm.

At Home: Ask your children about their learning. Discuss how your homelife is different compared to life on the farm.

Mathematics - This week, we reviewed and learned about collections, how to organise them to make them easy to count.

Integrated Studies - This week, students learned about geography by exploring different places. They learned about natural and built places and enjoyed comparing life on a farm to their own homes, as well as discovering how farms change across the season.

Religious Education - This week, we focused the importance of prayer in Mark 1:35 and our communities connection with Jerusalem.

Social & Emotional Learning - In social and emotional learning, students learned about our school-wide expectations of Safety, Respect, and Learning, and we talked about what these look like in our classroom and around the school. We also discussed our routines and the consequence cycle.

Next week

Reading - We will be learning the long vowel sound ai/ay.

Writing - We will reading "All through the Year" by Jane Godwin.

Mathematics- We will continue to count collections but will use bundling sticks instead to build our understanding of place value. Looking at how many tens and ones in a number.

Religious Education - We are exploring the importance of Ash Wednesday within the liturgical calendar.

Ways to engage with the newsletter:

  • Read the weekly book with your child at home (there is often a read aloud on you tube). Talk about what the book's most important ideas are.

  • Ask your child to retell the story using their own words.

  • Talk about who the characters are, where the story is happening.

  • Use the spelling words provided to make up sentences at home or simply a 5 word mini dictation.

  • Take the idea around Mathematics and ask students to repeat an activity they did at school, with you.
