Y1: Australian Reptiles Incursion

On Monday 16 February, our excited Year One students took part in a hands-on and highly engaging Reptile Incursion at school. There was plenty of excitement as students met some very special animal visitors - each with their own unique personality!

Meet Pickle the Snake

Our first special guest was Pickle the Snake. Students learnt that snakes are reptiles, are cold-blooded and use their tongues to smell the air around them. Many students showed wonderful bravery by gently touching Pickle under the careful supervision of the presenter. We were very proud of how calm and respectful everyone was.

Popcorn the Lizard

Next, we met Popcorn the Lizard. We discovered how lizards use camouflage to stay safe and how they regulate their body temperature by basking in the sun. Students asked thoughtful questions and enjoyed observing Popcorn’s movements up close.

Freddo the Frog

Although frogs are amphibians (not reptiles), we were very excited to meet Freddo the Frog. Students learnt about the frog life cycle and how frogs need water to survive. Freddo was a big hit, and everyone loved watching his gentle little hops.

Snappy the Saltwater Crocodile

The final (and very exciting!) visitor was Snappy the Saltwater Crocodile. Students learnt about crocodile habitats, their powerful jaws and how they have survived since the time of dinosaurs. There were lots of wide eyes during this part of the presentation!

A Wonderful Learning Experience

This incursion supported our Science learning about living things and their habitats.

 Throughout the session, students learnt:

  • The characteristics of reptiles and amphibians

  • How different animals move

  • What they eat

  • How they survive in their environments

Most importantly, our Year One students demonstrated excellent listening skills, bravery and respect for animals.

A big thank you to our wonderful presenter Ben for such an engaging and memorable experience.

Well done, Year One. You were fantastic!
