News from the Primary School

SP students receive a homework task each term. These projects are specifically designed to be open ended so they develop curiosity, autonomy, and transferable skills. A rubric is provided to scaffold all learning, however, the way in which the students choose to respond to the task is completely individual. The project is also directly related to our Core Studies unit; this term being ‘Science-works!’

This particular project by Amelie Brunton-Sader is an outstanding example of an open ended task. An opportunity to take curiosity, passion and creativity to this level! Please scan the QR Code to watch her incredible work! or use this link.

Junior Primary Minibeasts

This term Junior Primary students are invited to wonder and marvel at God's creation through investigating God's design, order and function for minibeasts in their natural habitats. We have been investigating different types of minibeasts found in our MECS environment and taking a closer look at their habitats.

During week 1 this term, students went on a Minibeast Safari in the bushlands area (aka, bush kinder) at the back of the school and documented all the minibeasts they found. In week 2 we had our Minibeast Incursion where Liz (with her assistant Lisa the stick insect) educated our students about what minibeasts are and the different features that minibeasts have. We enjoyed four rotations:

1) making warning bracelets and plasticine minibeasts,

2) using magnifying glasses and microscopes to get a closer look at minibeasts in resin,

3) digging for minibeasts and analysing their features in enclosed magnifying jars, and

4) feeding butterflies in the butterfly tent and taking a closer look at Lisa the stick insect and a yabby.

Later in the term, students will be working in small groups to closely investigate a chosen minibeast and its habitat. As a part of our Kids In Space program (we won a grant for this), we will be designing an enclosure using Makers Empire and our new 3D printer to recreate the minibeast habitat so that it can survive in space (theoretically!). The group with the best design will be invited to attend the schools showcase at the end of the term. What an exciting term ahead!
