From the Principal

Good morning everyone, we began Term 3 with a whole school assembly led by our very capable College Captains, Bridie Borthwick and Molly Pierce-Decker.

The assembly celebrated the success of our students. Many Year 9 students received a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Honourable Ben Carroll, Deputy Premier and Education Minister. The certificates were awarded to Year 9 students who exceeded in NAPLAN reading and/or numeracy, or both.

Our very own Drum Corps performed as did our senior band.

Bridie and Molly reflected on Term 2 and Ethan Lewis highlighted the amazing talents of our students in sport.

At the beginning of the assembly I spoke to our students and have included my speech.

‘Good morning and welcome back. I hope you had a wonderful break and are ready for the term ahead.

I would also like to say a special welcome back to Mr Parker, Ms Cruise and Ms Gibson. All who were on leave for Term 2.

I begin today acknowledging the traditional custodians of the land we are meeting on today, the Bunurong people of the Kulin nation and pay respect to elders past, present and emerging.

As I reflect on what makes our school truly exceptional, I think about the amazing opportunities afforded to you. I also think about the great learning that is happening in every classroom.

Our recent NAPLAN results have once again demonstrated academic excellence. The certificates were delivered to the college yesterday and will be sent home in the mail by the end of this week. The results for Year 7 and Year 9 demonstrate the hard work and dedication of you and your teachers. Congratulations.

NAPLAN results for Year 7 and Year 9 students have been sent to family homes via mail.

Many Year 9 students have received a certificate of achievement from the Honourable Ben Carroll, Deputy Premier of Victoria, also the Minister for Education. I intend to have these students collect their certificates as the end of my speech.

The Attitudes to School surveys you completed last term reflect a positive and supportive environment. The results indicate that you feel valued and respected. You have said, your teachers understand how you learn, they are able to explain things in different ways, and they often provide you with extra work. You have said you like learning and are motivated to learn. These all add to a great learning environment where everyone can be successful.

Community is one of our values and we can see this everyday. The collaboration between you and your teachers, working with your parents and the way we care about each other creates an environment where the expectation is one of respect and achievement, also our values. We all want to be the best version of ourselves and be proud of who we are and where we come from.

As we move forward into Term 3, let’s continue to build on these strengths and strive for even greater heights. I am confident that together, we will achieve remarkable things.

This term begins with many of you having to make decisions about next year.

Many of you attended the course information evening and collected a lot of information about the subjects and courses offered for 2025. Make sure you read the information provided so you are ready for your interviews. Year 9 going into Year 10 will have course counselling interviews Friday 26th July and Year 10s going into Year 11 Friday 2nd August. This is where we begin the work for 2025, so it is crucial you come prepared and think about where you would like to be when you leave school at the end of Year 12.

To the class of 2024, I've done the maths for you. You have only 13 weeks left of your secondary school education. There is no time to waste. Work harder than you have ever worked. Use every moment you have to understand and be proficient with the content of all subjects. Use your teachers as much as you can. I have a great feeling, this year will be the year of greatness.

Whether you are in VCE ATAR or VM, use your time wisely, speak to the Pathways team, so you are confident with the decisions you make about your future pathway.

To all students in all year levels, thankyou for being part of our community. We are a great school and together we can achieve anything. Work hard, achieve your best and continue to look after yourselves and each other’.

Thankyou for your ongoing support, I am looking forward to further working with our community in Term 3.

Middle School

Welcome to Term 3!

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are excited to welcome you and your children back to Term 3! As always, we hold high expectations for every student to complete their work and seek teacher help as needed.

We began this term with a successful whole school assembly where we revisited the achievements and events of Term 2. It's wonderful to see the progress our students have made. Student reports were published last term, and this term, students will be setting goals for their improvement.

Your child's NAPLAN results for Year 7 and Year 9 should have been received. We are proud to have presented NAPLAN Certificates of Achievement to our Year 9 students at the assembly for their outstanding or significantly improved test results.

Our students continue to impress us with their talents and dedication, engaging in various sports, clubs, and preparing for our upcoming College Production. Their involvement in these activities enriches our school community and highlights their diverse abilities.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our families for their continued support as we work together to achieve the best outcomes for your child. Let's make Term 3 a successful and productive period for everyone.

Warm regards,

Senior School

To students and families of the Mornington Senior School,

It has been great to see our wonderful senior school students return after the holidays. Unfortunately, we were greeted with a horrible day of weather on Monday, but it has improved a bit since then.

Course Counselling season

Term 3 is a busy term for the Senior School with our Year 10 & 11 students completing their subject selections for 2025. Our current Year 10s will be having their course selection interviews on Friday August 2. All students should have collected their course counselling booklet with their individual webcode.

When making decisions about their course selections, students and families should be guided by:

  • What they are interested in
  • A demonstrated record of achievement
  • What is required to apply for your preferred course after secondary school (if any)

Students and families are encouraged to ask questions of staff, the Careers team and the Coordinators to help inform their decisions. I look forward to seeing many

applications for students wishing to be part of the Year 11 VCE Vocational Major (VM) program which are due in by Friday 19th July. All relevant forms can be collected from the Student Services Office.

Last full term for Year 12 students

I wish our Year 12 students the best of luck as they embark on their final full term of classes. Students will have classes in term 4 for exam preparation (VCE ATAR) and finalising their VCE VM certificates including a final presentation.

The School Assessed Coursework (SAC) calendar has been published to students. We encourage our Year 12s to consider the impact of their external commitments on their educational outcomes.

The Year 12 team, with support from the Careers team, will be running multiple sessions for students to guide them through the process of applying for tertiary studies through VTAC and there will be further information for families in the next few weeks.

It will be a really busy term for our class of 2024, and I wish them all the best for this big push to the finish line.

Are You Prepared?

It’s the start of term 3 and it seems that a lot has been happening while I was away in term 2.

At the start of each term it is important that we take a moment to make sure that our students are ready for the term ahead.  There are lots of simple things that you can do to help improve your child’s success at school.

  1. CHECK that they have the correct books and materials including a functional charged laptop. Asking to have a look over these things, especially their class notes will send the message to them that YOU think these things are important, so THEY should think they are important.
  2. Having correct uniform. Its cold at the moment, so making sure your child has warm school uniform is very important.

Uniform is important. Not because a blue shirt makes your child smarter but because it gets them into a mindset of being a student. When I put my uniform on there are certain expectations of how I act and what I do.  It may be subtle but this change in thinking does make a difference to how students engage with the learning process at school.

If families are struggling to provide uniform please reach out to Student Services at school.

Kind regards,

Assistant Principal
