Mia McGurk, Year 10

Head of English and Languages, Mr Kerrigan, says he could not be prouder of Mia who presented a very "sophisticated and considered argument'' last Friday when she competed in this year’s Rotary Four Way Speaking Competition, placing second to Mercedes College.

Mia (pictured above celebrating with her parents) presented an argument inviting her audience to change the language that we use when discussing the mental health of teens. Mia argued that the language we use often stigmatises mental health and pressures teens to mask their conditions - at a cost to their long-term growth and security. Mia committed fully to the lengthy process of writing reviewing and practicing her speech, with Mr Kerrigan happily receiving and reviewing Mia's ongoing rewrites over the holiday break. "The iterations of her speech virtually followed me on my road trip from town to town as I made my way across the State,'' Mr Kerrigan said. "I applaud Mia for her authentic engagement in this competition. She chose a topic that she has a great passion for and accounted for herself and St George's, in a truly admirable fashion.''

Amelia Ball, Year 7

Another St George's student who had our wonderful school front of mind during the holidays was Amelia - pictured below in Melbourne.

During a family holiday, Amelia spotted a statue outside the State Library of Victoria which depicts - you guessed it - St George slaying the dragon. One for the pool room.
