It is National Science Week during Week 5 of this term (12-16 August). The theme - "Species survival - more than just sustainability!" – links well with our school theme for this term "Respect for the Environment".
The Science Department will be hosting a range of exciting activities - keep an eye on notices for when and where! The quizzes will be done in PCG time and the practicals will be available to all students as a drop-in.
Both after-school activities will be from 3.30pm-4.30pm and there will be a limited number of spaces available - up to 30 x Year 7-12 students for the Escape Room (note: Year 10 are on camp) and up to 30 x Year 7-10 students for the Incursion. If you have an extra-curricular activity during this day, you may be allowed to swap - please direqt message Mr Heath with expressions of interest, stating which event you would like to attend.
Karaoke on the Thursday lunchtime will be a House event where you will sing Michael Jackson's "Earth Song" with others in your House - please consider supporting Gandhi, Lincoln and Mandela through this fun activity! There will be some time to practise at school, but please practise at home too. YouTube Michael Jackson - Earth Song.
In the lead-up to Science Week, you are invited to make a marionette puppet i.e. puppet on strings at home. This puppet needs to be either of an endangered species or an extinct species that we can use to display in the Basement. These are due to be handed by the end of week 4 please to either one of our Laboratory Technicians or your Science Teacher, making sure that your name and year group is clearly yet discretely written on.
There will be a range of prizes on offer for these activities as follows:
During Science Week, there will be opportunities for us to raise money through donations for conservation causes linked to the theme - please dig deep! The Science Department will also contribute towards this donation! Happy Science Week!
We have been busy in Science celebrating and raising further awareness of NAIDOC Week by offering our Year 7-10 students a First Nations link to their Science lessons!
In Year 7, students made Rainbow Serpents, which links into their Classification Topic.
In Year 8, students focussed on how Animals and Plants indicate the various First Nation Seasons which links to their Cells (Multicellular Organisms) topic
In Year 9, students focussed on Land Management, which links into their Ecosystems Topic
In Year 10, students focussed on Fermenting Alcohol, which links into their Chemical Reactions Topic.
Many thanks to our Science Team Leaders and Lab Technicians for preparing and delivering these lessons.
Mr Michael Heath
