Our Year 8 Maths class recently got into the Olympic spirit with a unique project: solving linear graphing problems in the context of Olympic flags.
We are giving a special shoutout to Justin S and Finian M, who took on the Seychelles national flag and calculated its manufacturing specifications using linear equations.
In their quest for precision, Justin and Finian hand-sketched the flag's grid lines before taking their talents online to Desmos, a graphing software. Their seamless transition from pencil to pixels showcased their versatility and tech-savvy approach to the challenge.
This task is a prime example of how maths can mirror the world around us. By connecting their studies to a global event like the Olympics, our students experienced the relevance of their skills in a real-world context.
They also embraced the spirit of global community, exploring Seychelles' history and its people while interrogating some of the problematic history they have faced. In short, it was a valuable lesson in both mathematics and social consciousness.
Bravo to Justin and Finian for their innovative work - and here's to more projects that make maths as intriguing as the Olympics!
