Cheering for Chess
Vernon Clarke
Chess Club Coordinator
On Thursday August 1, students from Coburg High School, Australian Islamic College and Ballarat High School visited BSC to battle it out at the chessboard. This annual event was staged in the BSC Theatre, and players were there to win!
The 2024 BSC team is made up mostly by younger students who have had little competition experience, but all were enthusiastic and had high hopes. Unfortunately we were not the overall winners of the tournament, but our team members were very competitive and learned much from the tournament experience. They are already developing their battle plans and hopefully next year we will win the home town trophy!
Isaac Batten
Year 7
I liked how many people there were to play against and all the things I could learn from the other players. I learned a new opening which helped me win my next few games!
Fox Rodger
Year 8
To be good at chess you need to remember all the rules and to think logically! I think that I need to understand [more about] how other people think. In the tournament I won 4 games, drew once and lost twice. I lost to 4th place. I am excited to be going to the State Open tournament and I hope I can get medal there!
Congratulations to the following students who placed in the various Divisions:
Big thanks and well do to all the students who competed for the honour of our school:
Isaac Batten (Year 7), Georgia Breen (Year 9), Harriet Forge (Year 9), Rahil Sarbi Khan (Year 8), Ada Lee (Year 7), Lily Marshall (Year 11), Callum Martin (Year 8) , Miro Mukai (Year 8), Finian Mulcahy (Year 8), Fox Roger (Year 8), Justyn Starc (Year 11), Tomaz Starc (Year 8), Meer Vahanvati (Year 11), Summer Walsh (Year 7) and Oscar Watson (Year 8).
We also extend special thanks to Juztyn Starc (Year 11) who worked with the chess team as captain and coach.
Juztyn will be leading the team to the State finals in Term 4 - and we will all be cheering them on!
