Term 3 already! We can't believe that our students are now officially half way to Grade 3.
We hope that everyone had a lovely break over the holidays and was able to spend some quality family time together. We are all looking forward to another great term in Grade 2, filled with lots of learning, fun and smiles!
Reminders for Grade 2 Students & Families:
What will we be learning about in Term 3?
In Reading this term, the Grade 2 students will continue to focus on learning new vocabulary through defining and identifying new and interesting words in their Mentor Texts. They will learn how to recognise and define the text features in Non-Fiction texts and establish the main idea and supporting details. Later in the term, the Grade 2 students will explore visualising with fictional texts and practice speaking and listening by preparing and presenting a short speech about a chosen topic. Fluent reading will also be practised throughout the term using a range of approaches such as buddy reading.
In Writing, we will be continuing to expand our knowledge of phonics, spelling and grammar. We will be linking in to our Inquiry topic, ‘Children Around The World’ and The Olympic Games to investigate and create information reports.
In Numeracy this term, Grade 2 students will be revisiting place value with a focus on regrouping numbers up to 1000 and locating 4-digit numbers on a number line. They will be learning about multiplication, division, additive patterns and missing numbers, as well as looking at fractions, including halves, quarters and eights of whole numbers. We will be revisiting length, mass, capacity and time in measurement, and in shape, students will be learning to recognise 2D shapes and classify them using spatial terms.
This term our Inquiry topic is called ‘Children of the World’ with the big question being ‘How do children live in different countries?’. During Inquiry sessions students will be investigating and distinguishing what is familiar and different in the ways culturally diverse individuals and families live. They describe their experiences of intercultural encounters, and identify cultural diversity in the world and also their school and/or community.
We look forward to welcoming some parents and friends into our classrooms to share their experiences of growing up or living in another country or a bit about their culture.
How can you support your child with their Math at home?
My Numeracy - Students can log on to their My Numeracy at any time to work on their personal goals.
Mathletics - Students can also log on to their Mathletics to complete tasks that have been set by their teacher for them.
We have also included a link below to a website that includes a large variety of number fluency games and activities. If your family would like to engage in math work at home for your child, we encourage you to have a go at playing some of these games with your child.
