Grade 6

Explore the Learning in Grade 6

Writing:

This term in Writing, students will be working on writing a short story. Our theme is ‘The Journey’, and students will be planning in great depth, looking at the characters, setting and plot before drafting, revising and editing. These stories will be published as a Grade 6 Anthology, which will be published into a book that you will be able to purchase in Term Four. We will then be moving into writing and performing a podcast based on an Olympic Sport. Students will finish the term off by looking into persuasive texts in the form of opinion pieces and advertising, culminating in the students writing their own written piece.

Reading:

This Term in Reading, we will begin by getting in the Olympic spirit by immersing the students in Reading activities that provide an opportunity to research facts about the Paris Olympics and summarising information by delivering it in the form of a class Kahoot quiz. We will extend this knowledge by taking part in an integrated literacy unit that allows students to explore different forms of recorded audible literacy in the form of podcasts, commentary or interviews and then work towards creating their own podcasts. We will round out the term by beginning to analyse the opinions and language used in persuasive texts in order to create our own persuasive texts on a sports or Olympic theme.

Numeracy:

In Numeracy this term, students will focus on fractions for the first couple of weeks, looking at equivalent, improper and mixed fractions. We will be revising adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions. Once the Olympics start, students will be looking at data analysis and graphing based on Olympic results. We will hold our own ‘Frog Olympics' and students will be able to analyse, graph and report on the data of their results, by finding the mean, median, mode and range of their class data. We will then turn our attention back to fractions and work on converting fractions to decimals and percentages. We will finish the term looking into the cartesian plane.

Inquiry:

During Term Three students will be delving into all things Olympics. Integrated into Reading, Writing and Math’s, students will be researching, developing and producing a podcast and analysing data from the Olympics.

How parents can help their child at home:

Encourage students to complete their nightly reading and record in their diaries

Assist students with practicing their spelling words nightly

Students can complete optional Numeracy learning on My Numeracy via Essential Assessment

Reminders:

Baby photo’s - please send through a baby/toddler photo of your child. Thank you to the parents who have already sent them through. The students know if they still need to bring one in, so you can check with them if you are unsure.

Grade 6 Debating

On Thursday the 1st of August our two debate teams competed in their second debate. They all did an amazing job and made so much improvement from our first debate. The topic was 'Plastic Bottles Should Be Banned.' Our first debate was as the negative team, and we lost by 1 point, with Zara B being awarded best speaker. Our second debate we were the affirmative team and only lost by 2 points. All debaters did an amazing job, and we are now looking forward to our two unknown topic debates in the coming weeks.
