Grade 3/4 Term Overview
The grade 3/4 team is looking forward to another great term of learning! Here are some of the topics we will be covering:
Literacy
This term in literacy, we will explore the text structure and language features of non-fiction texts, including various types of information reports. Students will have the opportunity to research various topics using borrowed library texts and online resources to master the reading comprehension skill of determining importance through identifying keywords.
They will collate facts to create a well-structured non-fiction text of their choice while working through the Writing Process of planning, drafting, revising, editing, conferencing, and publishing. Students will focus on the syntax and grammar of sentence structures and types, creating their own statements, questions, commands, and exclamations. They will practice their fluency through reading aloud in pairs and providing each other with feedback.
Spelling – New Approach
Our new spelling workshops will run four days per week, providing 20 minutes of direct instruction targeted to your child's needs. There has been much anticipation around the long-awaited pen licenses, and Term 3 will see a major focus on students' Victorian Modern Cursive handwriting. Although not all students will receive their pen licenses, we are delighted to see the effort and enthusiasm from our 3/4 cohort. We will finish the term by returning to fiction texts, in the form of fables, where they will investigate morals and messages to create their own final published pieces.
Numeracy
In Number and Algebra, we are exploring Multiplicative Thinking and the Big Ideas in Number that provide the foundations for students to successfully apply multiplicative thinking concepts to various mathematical challenges. We will build on our students’ existing knowledge of trusting the count and place value to ensure they can move beyond seeing multiplication and division as repeated addition and instead access efficient strategies based on the number of groups.
This term in Measurement and Geometry, students will explore length, mass, and capacity and will practice using different instruments to measure various items. They will investigate converting units of measurement. Students will be involved in hands-on activities, such as delving into the long jump world records and estimating and measuring distances.
P.I.P.S – Garden Program
This term, students will continue to work in the garden. Please contact your child’s teacher if you would like to volunteer across the term.
