🌊 Staying Water Wise:Â
Kids Alive – Do the Five
As our K–2 students build their confidence at the pool each Wednesday, we are also teaching them water safety.Â
We encourage all families to reinforce theÂ
Kids Alive – Do the Five steps at home.Â
1. Fence the Pool
The first line of defense is a physical barrier.
- Check the Gate: Ensure your pool gate self-closes and self-latches every single time.
- Clear the Zone: Keep climbable objects (like chairs or pots) away from the fence.
2. Shut the Gate
A gate is only effective if it’s closed.
- No Propping: Never prop a pool gate open, even for a "quick trip" inside.
- Teach the Why: We talk to the students about why gates are "special doors" that only adults should handle.
3. Teach Your Kids to Swim
This is exactly what we are doing every Wednesday afternoon!
- Skill Building: Familiarity with the water reduces panic.
- Year-Round Practice: Continuous lessons help children maintain their "feel" for the water and build the muscle memory needed for survival strokes.
4. Learn Resuscitation
In an emergency, every second counts.
- Update Your Skills: We encourage all parents and carers to have an up-to-date CPR certificate.
- Display a Sign: Having a CPR chart visible in your pool area provides a vital "how-to" guide during high-stress moments.
5. Supervise - Watch Your Mate!
There is no substitute for active supervision.
- Be the "Lifeguard": When at the pool or beach, designate one adult as the "Water Watcher."
- No Distractions: This means putting the phone away and keeping your eyes on the water at all times. Even "skilled" swimmers need a watchful eye!
You can even sing the "Kids Alive – Do the Five" jingle with your child on the drive home from our Wednesday sessions to help them memorise these life-saving rules!
