Kitchen Garden

Our garden foundations are now in and our students each have their garden bed ready to sow seeds in. The seeds we will be planting are each class’s choice, we are exploring how to plant whilst having a good combination of plants that grow well side by side. Let’s see how we do!

The shed is on its way and a compost station will be built soon. We are very excited to reduce the waste in our school and produce our own compost. A poly tunnel for germination will also be placed in our garden, so exciting times.

Chickens

Hopefully next term the garden will welcome some chickens. I would like to hear from anyone that would like to be our “chicken families”, a shared responsibility from a few families that will put them to bed at the end of the day and look after them at the weekend, at your own home or at school.

Foxes are an obvious concern and any assistance in fox proofing our enclosure would be appreciated. If you have any skills in this area or are interested in being one of our chicken families please email me:

Volunteers’ role in the kitchen

I will say "Thank You", a lot, to our volunteers this year and I cannot help it . We truly would not have the same, fun experience in the kitchen without our lovely helpers.

The students need you to guide them but do all the work. So, they should be measuring and chopping, most certainly washing and drying their dishes themselves. We will most definitely have a lot of mistakes but as the saying goes you cannot learn without making mistakes.

One of our favourite Kitchen moments last year was a cup not a teaspoon of bicarb into our ANZAC biscuits to say they were inedible is an understatement, the fizz and soapy flavours mmmmm. Those students never guessed or did not reread the instructions properly again.

Our kitchen should be lot’s of fun whilst staying safe. It is lovely to check the kids’ manners and to encourage sharing in the group ensuring everyone gets a turn.

I have attached the recipes for this fortnight, the highlight was making their own noodles for the noodle salad. Although the yo-yo biscuits were devoured!
