ASSESSMENT & REPORTING

Middle Years Program Assessment and Reporting
In the last two weeks, students have received their first progress reports based on their learning behaviours and we hope you had an opportunity to meet their teachers at Student Led Conferences. This is now a great opportunity to walk you through the assessment and reporting process for the Middle Years Program (7-9) at MESC.
For most units of work that your child navigates, they will complete a CAT (common assessment task). This is a task which is common to every student in the year level to ensure consistency in our assessment tasks. Upon the completion of a CAT, a teacher will add a learning task to their subject on compass. This learning task will include:
- A Victorian Curriculum descriptor: a judgement that a teacher has made based on all of the work that the student has completed throughout a unit, as well as their involvement in discussions, any oral explanations etc. e.g. ‘At the standard, above the standard, below the standard’.
- An MYP grade: This will be based on criterion A, B, C or D outlined by the International Baccalaureate middle years program (IB-MYP) and represented as a number from 1-8.
- An MYP rubric: This allows you to read through the criterion to see why a student was assigned a specific grade.
If you have any questions regarding a learning task in a specific subject, we highly encourage you to contact your child’s teacher who can answer any query.
For a detailed guide on access your child’s learning task, as well as progress reports and semester reports, the following YouTube video has been placed on the MESC YouTube page for you to access and view at your pleasure; How to access learning tasks and reports on compass
Reporting at MESC occurs every 5 weeks according to the following schedule:
Semester 1 | Semester 2 |
Progress Report 1 – published 28th February | Progress Report 1 – published 15th August |
Progress Report 2 – published 4th March | Progress Report 2 – published 19th September |
Progress Report 3 – published 23rd May | Progress Report 3 – published 7th November |
Semester Report 1 2025 – published 4th July | Semester Report 2 2025 – published 12th December |
As mentioned above, the Progress Reports are a reflection of student learning behaviours whilst the Semester reports provide an overall judgement based on student achievement against the Victorian curriculum as well as the MYP grading criterion.
A Compass newsfeed notification is sent with the release of every report with direction on how to access them. For the first round of progress reports, parents and students were directed to the ICT knowledgebase which contains detailed directions on accessing and reading the report.
