Head of Sport Report

Welcome to Term 1! It is always a high-energy start to the year for BMGS sports. With just 3 weeks left in the ISA summer sports competition, we are quickly approaching the semi-finals and finals.

Last weekend saw a good start to competition with an almost 100% attendance rate which was great to see.

Everyone should also be looking forward to the swimming and cross country carnivals this term. All students are encouraged to get involved and help earn points for their house. Don’t forget to buy your swimming cap from the Uniform Shop for Friday.

Don’t hesitate to come and see me or drop me an email if you have any sporting questions.

I am looking forward to a successful and exciting 2025 for BMGS sport.

Congratulations

Hockey

Over the first two weeks of January, James Reynolds had the privilege of representing the U18 Men's Indoor NSW Blues at the National Championships in Canberra. The squad was a strong mix of experienced players and young, up-and-coming talent, allowing us to showcase plenty of skill and quality hockey. The pools weren’t in the teams favour, with tough early matches against Victoria, ACT, and QLD—Victoria later went on to beat ACT in the final. However, the NSW Blues team showed strong development throughout the tournament, with several narrow defeats and some high-scoring wins.

James gained a lot from this experience, improving over the competition and, most importantly, enjoying time on and off the field. James was also fortunate enough to receive the Players Player award, nominated by opposing sides and his own teammates at the end of the tournament. While finishing 7th overall wasn’t where the team had hoped to be, they were all proud of their efforts and achievements. James is hopeful for national indoor selection this year, both for himself and his teammates, and cannot wait for the opportunity again next year.

Basketball Reports

Round 7

Girls Basketball

BMGS v Barker

First V Girls Basketball Team
First V Girls Basketball Team

Firsts

The BMGS Firsts girls were always going to be in for a hard game this week with the Barker team made up of a number of players who had just returned from the U20 National Championships. The girls concentrated on getting some set plays going and slowing down the ball to enable this. The positive attitude of all the players from both teams ensured a game that was played in good spirits. Well done to both teams.

Open C

The Open C’s had a fantastic win against Barker last weekend. The score reflected how well they played as a team, finishing off well each time down the court. As well as this their defence was very strong, they listened to coaching feedback and implemented where required. The whole team should be really proud of their efforts last weekend.

Junior A

The Junior A girls played an excellent first half trailing by just two points against the strong Barker team. Unfortunately in the second half the much taller opposition was able to command the rebounds at both ends and eventually win the game 41-15. Izzy, Abbey and Lillian had strong games.

Junior C

The Junior C Girls played two games last Saturday, both against Barker College teams. The first game saw the team play their best defense of the year holding their opposition to just 11 points. The girls also showed a significant improvement in their offense moving the ball quickly to create good scoring opportunities. Maggie, Taylor and Ruby had strong games. In the second game they defeated the second Barker team 31-10. Maggie, Hayley and Charlotte played well.

Boys Basketball

SACS

Firsts

First Boys team faced St Andrew’s in an intense and closely contested match that pushed both teams to their limits, resulting in overtime. Throughout the game, we experienced plenty of highs and lows—executing well at times and going on strong runs, only to then lose momentum or defensive discipline, which impacted the scoreline. However, the boys came together in the overtime period to ensure we came away with the win.

Coming off a long holiday break, it was clear there were areas that need improvement, but the team showed great determination and resilience. Over the next few weeks, we will be focusing on refining our game, ensuring we stay disciplined, and building on our strengths. The boys are committed to putting in the work to get where we need to be.

17’s

The Second Boys team put in a strong effort from start to finish in a tightly contested match against St Andrew’s, ultimately falling short by just four points. It was a hard-fought battle, and the team showed great determination until the final buzzer. There were plenty of positives throughout the game, including solid team defense and more players stepping up as scoring threats. However, boxing out and rebounding proved to be challenges at times, and these will be key focus areas for improvement in the coming games. With continued effort and commitment, the team is determined to keep building and improving.

15’s

The 15 Boys were down a couple of players, as well as a couple with some ongoing injuries, so with 6 players we came up against the team we beat last time in overtime. Unfortunately, the other team seemed to have all grown an extra foot over the holidays, and matched that height with lots of physicality, and we struggled to get our feet in the game. There was not a single second of the game that our boys were not fighting for possession, taking some bumps on offence and defence, or cheering from the bench, which goes to show the commitment to the team from all the boys. Despite losing by 20 odd points, the boys played great basketball and made sure that a very skilled St Andrews team earned their win.

14’s

The 14 Boys came out of the gate strong, getting out to a 7-2 lead very quickly due to our great defence and our ability to get out in transition. We entered the half up 2 points, at 16-14, as we continued to be physical on defence as well as finding open shots on offence. Unfortunately, our offense stalled in the second half, and that allowed our opponent to get out in transition themselves. They also began to make some really tough shots, which ultimately led to a loss by 14 points. The boys played so well, and the critical lesson to take away from the game was to lean on each other when the games get tough, rather than play as individuals, which I am certain will be used in our final 3 games!

13’s

The 13 Boys were looking to start their 2025 off with a win, however we started the game off a little slow. Defensively, we weren’t quite active enough, and we were throwing a few turnovers to give St Andrews an early lead. After a timeout, the boys played brilliant defence and patient team offense, which clawed us slowly back into the game. Unfortunately, the St Andrews team proved too strong for us, as despite great performances from all the boys, the deficit grow steadily until we lost by 14 points. As we were down by exactly 14 points at halftime, the focus for next week is starting games on the front foot, as without the slow start we had the chance to win the game.

Girls Touch Football

Round 7

Juniors:

The Junior Girls hosted Barker 7s this week at home. While they did end up losing 9 – 1, I am very proud of the efforts that the girls showed on the weekend. They only played with 6 players for the whole 40 minutes, which meant that they had no subs and were playing in positions that they weren’t comfortable in. They continued to run hard, be positive and had some great defensive moments. Congratulations to Keitah on running around a few defenders to score a try.

Seniors:

The Seniors played right after the Juniors against Barker 2. Barker started the game well, leaving it to be 4 – 0 at halftime. Since it was the first game back after the holiday break, it was to be expected, but the girls kept their heads held high and took on everything that I said at the halftime break. They played the second half with high intensity and with a lot of defensive pressure. They managed to score 3 quick tries to bring the game back to a competitive total of 4 – 3. Unfortunately, we ran out of time and that was the final score, but I am happy with the way that the girls managed to turn the game around and be competitive with Barker.

Boys Touch Football

Round 7

Juniors:

The Junior boys touch team came up against St Spyridon in a thrilling home match which had both teams scoring back to back tries. The team worked hard to perfect their driving down the field and have been practicing their odds and evens in defence which clearly paid off through the final score of 4-4. The team scored some amazing tries through working as a unit and talking to each other when attacking the line. The boys should be proud of their efforts and the improvement they have made throughout the season. Let’s keep the momentum going into next week boys!!

Seniors:

The First Boys touch football team came up against a worthy opponent in SAS and had to work hard throughout the duration of the game in both attack and defence aspects. The team has been practicing putting moves on at training including sweepers and quickies and these paid off on the day. The familiarity of the home field and the cooperation and teamwork of the boys allowed them to draw 9-9 against SAS. The boys are encouraged to continue to work hard at training and tidy up their defence in order to gain themselves more draws and wins in the upcoming weeks. They have a great chance to win their game this week if they all put their minds to it and work hard on the field. Good luck boys!
