Fantastic 3/4
Term 3 Week 8 2024
What have we been up to?
In 3/4 students had a fantastic time at book week festivities, we saw some fabulous outfits and were so impressed with everyone getting into the spirit. The fathers day stall was also a huge success, with students buying fabulous gifts for their dads- thank you to any 3/4 parents who helped.
Students have continued working through the Morpheme Magic program and the Little Learners Love Literacy program and have enjoyed being exposed to a range of different word origins and phonemes. Weekly visits to the library have supported students to read regularly. Students have also been using the strategy of a ‘think aloud’ when reading different texts to make thinking more visible. Over the next two weeks of term, students will be continuing to visit the library once a week and engage in fluency pairs at least once a week. They will also engage with reading comprehension activities to strengthen their understanding of different texts in a deep and meaningful way.
In Writing, students have continued learning about different poetic devices and how these can be used by writers to bring their poems to life. Over the past week students have been having a go at incorporating all of their poetic devices into their own original poems. Students used personification to embody the feelings and thoughts of inanimate objects and then describe their surroundings. They have also explored how Onomatopoeia can be used to give a poem more interest. Students will continue developing their understanding of different poetic devices and begin learning about how to use language to enhance imagery and create an engaging narrative. Next week students will be revisiting narrative writing. Students will be supported to write a narrative about bushfires and then move to write a narrative about a flood independently.
In Maths, last week students looked at problem solving. Focusing on helping kids use their existing knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in more complex ways and encouraging them to think critically about how they approach problems. This week students have started the unit of measurement and geometry, beginning with properties and shapes. Identifying and comparing 2D and 3D shapes. Over the final two weeks of term, students will begin learning about measurement and how to they can use measurement tools to create an accurate map of different familiar spaces.
This Term in Inquiry, students have begun learning about the role that local governments play in the lives of their constituents. After briefly exploring the three levels of Australian Government and their unique responsibilities at a local, state and national level, students will investigate their own local government and envisage ways of creating a better local community.
