Book Week 2024

What a Week it was!

With a focus on bringing the celebrations to the wider Barraba Community this year, our students were the amazing ambassadors we know them to be for both our school and for reading!

Monday saw every class group take a turn at visiting our town library and becoming more familiar with this great town resource. The amazing Bec Capel had them planning, writing and sharing their own stories based on wonderful imagination and fun. Thank you Bec and a special thank you to Mrs Sullivan who got to attend every session whilst getting to know Barraba a bit more! Our CSO Armidale director Mrs Regina Menz even included a picture of this in her own report last week that goes out to the entire Diocese!

Tuesday had every single student of our school attend and join in the fun of the parade. This is sensational!  Shout out to our new teacher Mrs DJ - Russell who was magic on the music.  After morning tea it was off to Richardson House for our middle and senior class where they were met with smiles and laughter from the residents. Our wonderful Preschoolers meantime were exploring the magic of puff paint and had a go at decorating their own library bags with the paint in our school library. Special thanks to the Preschool staff and Mrs Bomford for helping with this. Tuesday afternoon was a time for fun in house groups while they put their minds through the challenges, hunts and puzzles. Thank you to Mrs Phillips and our helpful adults for their planning and management of the afternoon session.

Wednesday was a very special opportunity for our terrific Year 2 and 3 students to take a lead in reading. The whole class visited Barraba Preschool where, in pairs, they read to a group of 2 or three Preschoolers, demonstrating their wonderful storytelling and reading skills along with some terrific questioning and predicting techniques. It was such a positive experience that we have been invited back to do it again! Thank you to Katie, Glenda, Nikki and Michala for allowing us to share our love of reading with your students.

Thursday and Friday were incredibly fun days when we had surprise visitors from our community come and read to different classes throughout each day. It was so much fun to have all our visitors give up their time to model reading for us all. Thank you to Chris Jefferey, Mark Dempsey, Dave Penna, Bec Capel, Ben Abell, Caitlin Griffiths and Luke Urqhuart. The students loved it!

Of course we also squeezed in a Book Fair, which is the first time we have run one in over 7 years! A huge thank you to everyone who supported this event. As a result, the school has gained over $450 worth of books to use.

Special thank you to all our parents and friends who continue to support, grow and inspire a love of reading in our young people. What a gift!
