Grade 1 & 2 Learning English & French

Year 1/2 Sustainability
This term, the 1/2 classes have been learning about sustainability and the importance of caring for our planet. One of the ways we explored this was by discussing the "3 Rs"—Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle—and how these practices help protect the environment.
To deepen our understanding, we conducted a hands-on science experiment to investigate how different materials biodegrade in soil over time.
As part of the experiment, we buried three different items: a piece of cardboard, a plastic object, and an apple core. Before starting, we made predictions about which materials would break down and how quickly.
To ensure consistency in our experiment, we used a ruler to measure and dig holes that were 10 centimetres deep for each item. After burying the objects, we marked each of the three spots with icy pole sticks labelled with the names of the materials. We then carefully followed the rest of the instructions and will check the results at the end of the term.
Thank you, 1/2 Classes.

Year 1/2 French
Throughout Term 3 we have been exploring the seasons in Europe. We have focused primarily on the northern hemisphere in French, and whilst learning about time in mathematics, the children have compared these with the seasons in the southern hemisphere.
Students are learning the key vocabulary needed to describe and talk about the weather, as well as other important aspects of each season.
Throughout the term, the students` confidence and ease with these simple sentence starters have grown, and we have seen children recognise and draw upon the sentence starters from Terms 1 and 2 to expand their writing.
We study each season for two weeks and use this theme to work on writing, reading, and creating art or experiments.
This week, the spotlight is on autumn, and students have been learning about animals that hibernate or migrate. In the photos, 1/2A is preparing fact sheets on various animals (hedgehogs, whales, bears, squirrels, etc.). 1/2B has created small books about autumn.
When we studied winter we talked about the weather and how clouds and rain are formed which was the perfect opportunity for an experiment. We used shaving cream and food coloring to create clouds and mimic the rain. It was a fun experiment.
