A TIME FOR REST

BY IVAN SESKIS (Deputy Principal)

As we move through July and August in Melbourne, the crisp, cold mornings and shorter days remind us that winter is truly here. As Melburnians, weather is often the topic of conversation that can break the ice (sorry for the winter pun). While many of us talk about warmer weather and escaping the cold, I kind of like that we have wide and varied weather conditions in Melbourne - even the cold, wet, chilly days. Winter offers us an opportunity to slow down, just like nature around us.

When I look at the trees outside my window, I see that many have shed their leaves and are dormant, conserving energy and resources. Beneath the surface, life is preparing for spring. Ah, spring…how I love the new life it brings.

In our busy lives, it's easy to get caught up in the constant rush. Moving from one activity to the next and then onto the next one after that. While this can be enjoyable, I know I need moments to pause, to recoup, and to rest. Winter, with its slower, quieter pace, can be a gentle reminder to do just that.

I feel like the winter season invites me to slow down and take some time to reflect. Just like nature around us, taking time to slow down can help me prepare for what's next and prepare me to put a ‘spring’ in my step (did you like the seasonal pun? Come on Dads - I know you smiled a little for that one.)

So, as you enjoy the warmth of your homes, I encourage you to embrace the winter season's invitation to slow down, to rest and reflect, and to pray. You might be surprised at the peace and clarity you discover.

Psalm 46:10: "Be still, and know that I am God."

Matthew 11:28-30: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
