Year 7 News

Highlights from the Year 7 Parent Information Evening

Thank you to all families who attended our recent Year 7 Parent Information Evening. The session provided valuable insights into how Applecross SHS supports students in their transition to high school and fosters successful learning across the MESH subjects: Mathematics, English, Science, and Humanities and Social Sciences (HaSS).

We explored the qualities of a successful learner (being prepared, engaged, and reflective) and shared practical strategies to help students thrive academically and personally. Curriculum content, assessment schedules, and expectations for student organisation and participation were outlined for each Learning Area.

Highlights included:

  • Science: A detailed semester plan covering inquiry skills, chemical and biological sciences, and Earth and physical sciences, supported by the STILE digital platform.
  • English: Study tips, such as reading widely across fiction and non-fiction, engaging with current affairs, reflecting through journal writing, maintaining book logs, participating in discussions on social and ethical issues, and seeking feedback on practice responses from teachers.
  • HaSS: Coverage of Geography, History, Economics, Business, and Civics, with a strong focus on critical thinking and real-world application.
  • Mathematics: Focus on proficiency strands and structured learning via CambridgeGO.

We also discussed the importance of feedback, reflection, and parental partnership in supporting student wellbeing and academic growth.

We encourage families to maintain open communication with teachers and support students in developing effective study routines and habits.
