On 16th June we were very excited to welcome back a special guest to our school, Kerrie Taylor. Kerrie is a celebrated Deaf author with 11 books in her series. All students from Foundation to Year 6 had the opportunity to meet with Kerrie and participate in an incursion, learning how to share information and stories through signs, facial expressions, and body language. Kerrie also shared her experiences growing up Deaf in a hearing world and answered questions about the many ways deaf people communicate and connect with others.
The students walked away from the session, having gained a deeper appreciation for Deaf culture and the Auslan language. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Kerrie for sharing her language and her passion for Auslan with us.
What a fantastic and fun-filled Term 2 we’ve had in Foundation! It’s been a term full of learning, laughter, creativity, and curiosity, and we couldn’t be prouder of all the wonderful things our students have achieved.
We explored antonyms, and it was such a delight to see students using them so confidently in their writing. We also continued to focus on our handwriting, practising both upper- and lower-case letters, while improving our overall presentation and letter formation. The progress has been fantastic!
One of the highlights was our exciting Zoo of Curiosity project. Students let their imaginations run wild as they invented their own animals, thoughtfully labelled their features, described their habitats and diets, and even created invitations for our buddy classes to attend their special presentations. The creativity on display was incredible! Making zookeeper hats and experimenting with watercolours added a whole lot of colour and fun to the experience too.
We were also lucky to enjoy a special visit from Dewi, Sophie’s mum, who brought in Biscoff and Doughnut, two adorable guinea pigs. The children were captivated by this hands-on learning experience and asked thoughtful questions. A big congratulations to Sophie, who shared amazing guinea pig facts and proudly presented a detailed labelled diagram. Well done!
It’s been a busy, engaging term, and we are all ready for a well-deserved break. As we look ahead to Term 3, we are excited for more learning, more celebrating, and plenty of new challenges, always approached in the most fun and exciting way possible.
Wishing all our families a safe, warm, and relaxing holiday. We can’t wait to hear all about the exciting family adventures when we return!
Warm regards,
The Foundation Team
Last week, students from 3/4R and 1EM came together for a special Buddy Class session filled with fun, learning, and connection. The classes paired up to enjoy a variety of board games, creating the perfect opportunity to practise important social and learning skills in a relaxed and supportive setting.
As they played, students worked on their communication, collaboration, turn-taking, and problem-solving skills, all while building strong friendships across year levels. It was wonderful to see older students guiding and encouraging their younger buddies, and younger students confidently joining in the fun.
There was plenty of laughter, thoughtful discussion, and teamwork throughout the session, and many students shared that it was a highlight of their week. Buddy time is a valuable part of our school culture, and we look forward to more opportunities for connection and growth between classes.
“It was a good opportunity to play games with the younger kids. It was so nice to get to meet them and have some fun” - Gabe
“I had fun playing with the Year 3/4s. I played four in a row.” - Tilly
“I think it was really good because they're only one year into the school which is good for them to meet us and get to know older people. It was good for us too because we usually just play with each other” - Jayan
“I played four in a row too and I had lots of fun!” - Islay
Last week students from 3/4L & 1TD came together for an afternoon of games, puzzles and drawing for a buddy collaboration. The room was abuzz with laughter, smiles, and joy, as Year 3/4 shared their favourite games with their buddies. Students worked on communication, turn taking, and negotiating skills, to help build their relationships and resilience. We look forward to spending quality time together to support each other in the classroom and in the yard.
“I enjoyed getting to see our buddies again and getting to play some fun games” - Georgie
“I liked playing uno with my buddy” - Luke
Mulga Bill's Bicycle
Students have been studying the bush ballad, Mulga Bill’s Bicycle by Banjo Patterson. This poem is a funny portrait of Mulga Bill, a very conceited character who boasts that he is the best at everything he does. Each line in the poem has fourteen syllables and uses rhyming couplets along with vivid language and imagery. Here are some of the work produced by some Year 4 students.
Melbourne Museum & IMAX
On the 25th of June the Year 5/6 students had the opportunity to go to the Melbourne Museum. There were so many exciting and fascinating walks as well as exhibits that we got to experience like 600 million years which included crystals, gems and rocks, lots of them. We loved learning about the different types of rocks. There was the dinosaur fossil room where you could see real fossils of old dinosaurs. There were plant exhibits, and even one called Bugs Alive, so many bugs! After we went to the exhibits we went to the movie IMAX theatre, where we watched a documentary about extreme weather, it was so fun we could go there again. Thank you to our amazing 5/6 teachers for organising such an amazing day.

On the 25th of June the NLPS Year 5/6 cohort travelled to the Melbourne Museum to experience Australian and Victorian history, science and the environment. Some main attractions we went to were the Forest Gallery, Bugs Alive, the Dinosaur Walk, 600 million Years and lastly the IMAX, where we watched Extreme Weather. Some of my favourites were: the IMAX and the Forest Gallery.

Last week, the we went on an excursion to the Melbourne Museum right next to the IMAX movie theatre. The classes got to see fossils of ancient animals, live insects, a rainforest, see beautiful rocks and crystals. They had tons of fun and experienced a magical and cool event. After, the classes went over to IMAX and watched a documentary on natural disasters called ‘Extreme Weather’.

Congratulations to Eve Williams in Year 6 who found out late last week that she has been selected for the Victorian Schools State Netball team.
Starting back in February, Eve has had to participate in several netball trials. We are very proud of her achievements and are thrilled that her skills, dedication, and hard work have been recognised with this selection.
It continues an impressive recent record for Newport Lakes students. In recent times we also celebrated Jake and Marcus Pilovski, who were successful when attempting to make the State teams in soccer.
We would like to wish Eve all the very best in her future Netball endeavours.
