Teaching and Learning in Practice

Students in Year 1/2 have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes during the first two weeks of Term 2. Tangrams were a big hit! The students loved manipulating the shapes to make composite shapes, animals, ships and flowers.

Tangrams are used to develop spatial reasoning, problem-solving skills, and geometric understanding. Working in groups takes great skill and negotiation. It is very interesting to watch the students co-operate and collaborate.

Foundation C has been learning about the weather and how different types of weather events are formed. We have been tracking the weather patterns daily and have kept a weather journal, recording and describing the weather, predicting future weather and identifying appropriate clothing for different types of weather.

The class conducted an investigation based on rain clouds through completing the 'cloud in a jar' experiment. They made predictions and used shaving foam, coloured water and a dropper to model how rain falls. A class science report was written and the students drew pictures of the results of the experiment.

This activity was connected to the outcome ‘daily and seasonal changes in the weather and the environment can be observed and affect decisions made in everyday life’ from the Victorian Curriculum. The students are very excited to participate in more experiments as we progress through the rest of the science strands during Semester Two.
