Principal Message
A warm hello to all members of the Copperfield College family and especially to those here at the Kings Park campus. It may sound like a cliché but the year and the term is flying past at a great rate of knots.
While the weather has been quite frosty, the warmth of the campus as far as what’s really important (it’s people), makes it a positive and happy place for learning, teaching and thriving in a community.
As any school and at any time of the year, much is happening here at the Kings Park campus. A summary of the “goings on” are highlighted belowCampus Assembly 25/6 – The theme of our end-of-term assembly
Campus Assembly 25/6 – The theme of our end-of-term assembly last term was, “It’s half time, ready for a big second half” which in sporting terms means that we reflect on the successes and challenges of our first semester but also understand that we have another semester to go. The assembly was a celebration of achievements, an opportunity for students to speak about events/programs/activities they’ve been involved with an opportunity to listen to a couple of fabulous performances from our music students, ably assisted by our hard working Performing Arts Team. A big thankyou to all who made the assembly a success, to all the presenters and performers. As well as this, congratulations to all RRR recipients for their demonstration of College Expected Behaviours. Well Done!
Year 10 camp - The 2025 Year 10 Camp was an outstanding success, hosted by PGL Camps in the scenic hills of Tylden, Victoria. Students from both Sydenham and Kings Park campuses represented Copperfield College so well that PGL staff provided overwhelmingly positive feedback, commending their teamwork, respect, and engagement. Despite the occasional spats of rain and often freezing temperatures, students embraced every challenge with a fearless enthusiasm, building both individual resilience and collaborative skills. Activity Highlights included the Giant Swing, Leap of Faith, Laser Tag and Raft building. The energy, camaraderie, and determination shown by all made it a truly memorable experience. We look forward to doing it all again with our 2026 Year 10s!
Year 8 Wellbeing Day – During the final week of Term 3, the Wellbeing Team had the Year 8 Wellbeing Day on Wednesday the 25th of June at the Kings Park Campus. On this day, there were 2 activities arranged for our Year 8 group, Project Rockit and Melbourne Djembe Drumming. The day was designed to boost awareness regarding mental health and wellbeing, and encouraged the starting of conversations with one another about the importance of wellbeing.
Project Rockit - elevates students with confidence and resilience to take positive action at school, in the community and wider world, through exploration of leadership values and decision-making. African Drumming – This program was a great way to promote focus, self-awareness, confidence and improve communication and cohesion within a student group.
In between the two sessions, there was also a Community Engagement Expo, with volunteers from the Proactive Policing Unit, Headspace, Melton Youth Services, Brimbank Youth Services, Melbourne City Mission and Centre for Multicultural Youth. This provided an opportunity for students to interact with these services, and learn a little more about the services these groups can provide. A big thanks to the College Wellbeing Team for their efforts in realising a successful day. Well Done!
Staffroom Launch Morning Tea – After much patience and anticipation, the Kings Park staff were finally repatriated into their renovated and furnished staffroom. It certainly feels like such a new, bright and fresh social and working space for our wonderful staff. A morning tea was held on Wednesday August 6 to officially launch the new facility.
Farewell Matt Huggins and David Power – During this morning tea, the campus farewelled David Power who is returning home to Ireland to teach, as well as Matt Huggins, our Maintenance officer who is moving on to another chapter in his life. We wish both David and Matt all the very best and hope they always keep a part of Copperfield College in their heart.
Year 9 Pathways Evening – On July 3, Year 9 students (as well as those from Sydenham) were invited to a Pathways evening facilitated by our Pathways Leader Ms. Tina Tsaloukis at the Delahey campus. The evening was very much about exposing students to what they can expect over the next three years as well as opportunities for acceleration of VCE subjects in Year 10. Former students of Copperfield College also spoke about their journey to finding a career that gives them purpose. Just as importantly, staff, parents/carers and students met in the library afterwards to discuss future pathways in a more informal setting while enjoying refreshments
More Pathways @ Kings Park – Over the last few weeks, other Pathways related events have occurred at the Kings Park campus including the Year 8 into 9 (Arts, Technology and LOTE) Expo as well as the Year 9 into 10 electives Expo, all designed to provide students with opportunities to become more informed about subject selections for next year. On Tuesday August 12, the Year 10 students undertook their final Course Counselling session with our Pathways staff, and this included the course finalisation on our timetabling system. Hopefully the students have taken advantage of all the resources and supports afforded to them and have made their subject selections based on the most informed information.
Maintenance works at KP - We have moved from three major works to two major works. The progress on the new oval has been as expected without any reported delays. We should have this oval back in November this year. Here is the run-down of the Planned Maintenance Works
•T Team roof sheets removed and replaced. T Team will remain fenced off and we have interruptions to the power and electricity. This will not be resolved until the roof works are complete. After a four week delay the engineering team have declared the roof is safe to proceed with works after an assessment.
•Technology storerooms for T1 and T2. T2 is currently out of action. We will continue to use T1. Workers have removed the parquetry and sealed the floors. The works are now to fix the storeroom doors.
•Room T6 Re-pinning. This work has been identified as issues to the window lentils and therefore re-pinning is not necessary. We will confirm at a later date when this work will begin. Room T6 will be unavailable Period 1 to Period 4 on 5/8 so the builders can ascertain the work required to replace the window lentil.
•Science Block. Repinning of the corner closest to the visitor car park to prevent any further sinking of the building. Replacing roof sheets. Work expected to start soon.
•L Team and Library building. Maths scaffolding storage room works to improve the roof. Some library windows and some of the exterior walls of the library portable to be replaced. Replacing roof sheet of the building. Roof works to continue and are expected to be completed by 18/8.
•From 5/8 Old Drama Space. The floors will be repaired, sanded, and sealed. Work have commence on 15/8. This is expected to last for approximately 10 days.
•Music Block. Roof works have begun. Roof works to continue.
Room M3 floor will be repaired, sanded and sealed and this work will commence when the Old Drama Space is completed.
•From 4/ 8 Covered Walkways. Rust treatment to be applied to various affected areas. Works to continue.
Campus meeting Day 1 – Campus meetings aren’t usually an exciting event to write about in a Campus Principal’s Report however, the one held on Day 1 this term was special. Three of our Student Leaders, Sarah Scarcella, Trish Truong and Emily Tran presented data from the student cohort on a wide range of topics from uniform to the environment to teaching and learning to our staff, including opportunities for “vox pop” with the audience. Our leaders conducted themselves with the utmost professionalism and confidence (after they got over their nerves) befitting their roles as leaders in the school. Well done!
NAIDOC excursion July 2 – Held at the Sydenham campus, 3 Kings Park students attended. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students were invited to attend an art creation activity. During this time, students were supported in creating artwork to be shared with the Brimbank-Melton Council Areas.
NAIDOC WEEK 2025 – Theme “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy” The First Nations students in the Brimbank Council and Melton Council area created artwork that is displayed in an exhibition hosted by Watergardens Shopping Centre (Brimbank Council Schools) and at Woodgrove Shopping Centre (Melton Council schools) as part of NAIDOC Week 2025. This art exhibition ran for a two-week period from July 6 to July 20
Following this, the moving Art Exhibition will then spend a two-week period each at the Brimbank Sunshine Library and then The Department of Education Brimbank Melton Area office in Keilor. All paintings will then be returned to the students at their schools.
Melbourne Theatre Company HQ Tour – July 29 – Our Indigenous student group had the opportunity to explore Arts and career opportunities at the Melbourne Theatre Company. This included a behind-the-scenes tour of the various departments, including sets, design, costume and millinery, as well as an opportunity to ask staff member’s questions. The students were shown the process of developing and putting on a production, identifying the variety of roles and the skills that were utilised.
Fuji Farewell Assembly – On Monday August 11, the Kings Park campus hosted the farewell assembly for our Fuji Junior High School students and staff. It was a resounding success as far as celebrating all that is special with our sister school relationship and also reflecting on the amazing and unique experiences shared. Of course it was tinged with some sadness as we applauded their exit from the gymnasium but hopefully, Copperfield College returns to Japan in 2026. A big thankyou to Ms. Chiodo, Mr. Petherick and the entire Fuji team. An amazing effort!
Year 8 Snow trip – On Monday 4th August, 70 enthusiastic Year 8 students gathered at Kings Park at 5.45am to travel to Lake Mountain for a day of tobogganing and snow play. The weather at Lake Mountain was ideal, with mild temperatures, great visibility and breaks of sunshine; you couldn’t wipe the smiles off the students’ faces - whether it be from seeing & touching snow for first time, racing toboggans down the hill, or throwing a sneaky snowball at their teachers in the snow play area. All too soon our time at the snow was over and there were more than a few sleepy students (and staff) on the bus ride home! Thanks to the Campus & Team Leaders for organising this very enjoyable day.
Morrisby – On Monday August 4, the College Pathways Team in conjunction with our Year 9-10 Student Management Team facilitated the Morrisby testing regime for Year 9 students. Through timed aptitude assessments and multiple choice questionnaires, a Profile is prepared, offering a fascinating insight into a person’s inner strengths and abilities, preferences, motivations, and personality through focusing on a student’s aptitudes, interests, work-style, work place and personality.
After the testing, trained Morrisby counsellors will conduct one-on-one interviews with our Year 9 students to flesh out the profile and provide a meaningful artefact and direction for their future pathways.
STRENGTH program – This term, the 1000 Generations Organisation as well as the Proactive Policing Unit are facilitating an 8 week program for Year 9 and 10 boys called “The Strength Program”. It’s foci are:
• getting students to identify themselves as valuable with much to contribute to society,
• building confidence and gaining an understanding of their intrinsic value,
• development of decision-making and problem-solving skills,
• understanding that they are able to have a positive influence in their world,
• identifying personal desires and strengths to motivate them to set and achieve personal goalsI think that’s all for the moment. Until we communicate again, stay safe, happy and healthy.
I think that’s all for the moment. Until we communicate again, stay safe, happy and healthy.
