TERM 2 WORK EXPERIENCE

Why do work experience?

1. Career Exploration

  • Work experience allows students to "try out" a job or industry they're interested in
  • It helps confirm career interests—or rule them out—before committing to further study or training

 2. Skill Development

  • Students gain practical, transferable skills like communication, teamwork, time management, and problem-solving
  • It builds confidence in interacting with adults and navigating a workplace

3. Understanding the Workplace

  • Work experience gives insight into professional expectations, routines, and culture.
  • It helps students understand what a full workday is like and the importance of punctuality, initiative, and responsibility

 4. Networking and References

  • Students can start building a network of industry contacts.
  • A good placement might lead to a future job opportunity or a reference for employment or further study

 5. Resumé and Application Support

  • Having work experience on a resumé shows motivation and initiative to future employers or training providers
  • It gives students something meaningful to talk about in interviews or personal statements

 6. Personal Growth

  • It fosters independence, self-awareness, and resilience
  • Many students leave their placement with a clearer sense of their strengths and what they value in a career

Nikita Ram - 2025 WEHI Secondary School Work Experience Program

For my work experience, I completed a placement at WEHI, a renowned medical research institute. I chose this organisation because of my strong interest in biology and medicine and a desire to learn more about the field of medical research. I was hoping to gain insight into the daily work of researchers, and the experience exceeded my expectations. It was hands-on, engaging, and provided opportunities to participate in real lab experiments using professional equipment. I would highly recommend this program to other students, as it offers a valuable and inspiring look into the world of scientific research.
