From the Year 3 Classroom

Week 7 in upon and the end of the term is around the corner. We have just under 4 weeks left and plenty to do before then.
Reading
To link in with our work in Inquiry we are exploring non-fiction texts on different countries. Our focus last week and this week is on non-fiction text features and how these deatures help us navigate a text and find information.
We have begun our final class novel for the year, Mr Stink by David Walliams, a book the students certainly enjoying. In addition to this we are also reading Harry Potter for serial reading.
Writing- Explore Australia’s Neighbors!
In this exciting nonfiction writing task, students will dive into the cultures, geography, and unique features of the nations that share close ties with Australia. Each student will choose one of Australia’s neighboring countries and create a detailed report about it.
Students will be using their research skills before writing detailed paragraphs on each subheading. This is a great opportunity to learn more about our region and discover what makes these countries special!
Religious Education
We have completed our unit on Creation and commence our Source of Life Christmas Unit – The Jesse Tree. In this unit we will explore how Christmas is a fulfilment of God’s promise and a time to celebrate Jesus’ birth. We will also explore Advent as a time of looking forward to the fulfilment of God’s promise.
Maths- Multiplication and Division
Both week 7 and week 8 we are revisiting our multiplication and division unit. This week we are primarily investigating multiplication, both with and without regrouping. Students that know their multiplication facts find division tasks easier to perform, so it is a timely reminder to encourage your child to continue timetables practise. If you are looking to ‘mix’ it up a bit with the practise Yahtzee is a fun, family game to play and there are also raps and songs on iTunes and Spotify.
Multiplication Masters
A big congratulations to Pippa Whinray, Taz Riches, Diya Preet and Mack Hargrave on becoming Multiplication Masters!
Inquiry
We are looking a little outside of Australia in the coming weeks and checking out who our ‘neighbours’ are. We will investigate what role Australia plays to our neighbouring countries and deeper into the foreign aid Australia provides to countries less fortunate than ours.
Religious Education
We continue our unit ‘For Creation Praise’. We will be exploring Psalms and Scripture relating to creation.
Have a good week,
From Year 3 Team
