Magnify Sandhurst – an update – The importance of daily review

At Sacred Heart, we are committed to continuous improvement in teaching and learning. From what we have been learning about the Science of Learning, we have a greater understanding of the importance of daily review.

Why Daily Review Matters in Primary School Learning

Daily review is one of the most powerful tools for helping children learn effectively. Research from the science of learning shows that our brains remember information better when it is revisited regularly. This process, called retrieval practice, strengthens memory and understanding by asking students to recall what they learned before. It’s like exercising a muscle—the more it’s used, the stronger it becomes.

When teachers start the day with a short review of previous lessons, children connect new ideas to what they already know. This reduces forgetting and builds confidence because students see their progress over time. Daily review also helps teachers spot gaps early and provide extra support where needed.

For parents, this means that when your child talks about “going over yesterday’s work,” it’s not just repetition—it’s a proven strategy to make learning stick.

How You Can Help at Home

  • Ask your child to explain one thing they learned today.
  • Use quick questions like “What did you do in maths yesterday?” to spark recall.
  • Praise effort—reviewing is about strengthening memory, not getting everything perfect.

Daily review isn’t about doing more work—it’s about making learning last.
