Year 6 Melbourne City Camp – Newsletter Reflection

Last week, our Year 6 students enjoyed an unforgettable three day adventure on their Melbourne City Camp. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to develop independence, strengthen friendships and immerse themselves in some of Melbourne’s most iconic educational and cultural experiences. Here’s a snapshot of what they got up to.

Day 1 – Wednesday 12 November

Our campers were full of excitement as they departed bright and early at 6:00am on a Fallons Yarrawonga Luxury Coach.

Upon arrival at City School Camp (CYC), students settled in quickly before heading to the beautiful Royal Botanic Gardens for a teacher-guided session exploring plant life and the importance of biodiversity.

After enjoying their BYO lunch outdoors, the group visited the Melbourne Museum, exploring both the Melbourne Story Gallery and the ever-popular Dinosaur Walk.  We were also very fortunate to experience the brand-new exhibition, Our Wondrous Planet, which captivated students with its interactive displays and stunning exploration of Earth’s natural history and environments. The learning continued at IMAX, where students were captivated by the immersive movie experience of Australia, some chose this time to have a much-needed nap.

The day finished with plenty of laughs and friendly fun at Kingpin Crown, where one energetic game of bowling wrapped up a very full first day.

Day 2 – Thursday 13 November

After a slower start to the day and breakfast, students spent the morning at the Melbourne Zoo, learning about animal adaptations, habitats and conservation efforts during a teacher-guided tour.

A packed lunch at the zoo kept everyone fuelled for the next highlight: a behind-the-scenes look at the Melbourne Cricket Ground during an MCG Tour. Students also enjoyed exploring the Australian Sports Museum, discovering Australia’s sporting history and interactive exhibits.

The evening concluded with a mystery tour along South Bank and Fed Square where the students gorged on ice-cream. The tour concluded with a viewing of the much-anticipated Christmas Windows at Myer.

Day 3 – Friday 14 November

Our final morning began with a guided tour of Parliament House, where students deepened their understanding of democracy and how laws are made. This was a very special day as Parliament were sitting. Students experienced the opening procession and the chaos of parliament first hand.

Students then visited the Shrine of Remembrance for the Welcome to the Shrine program, a powerful and reflective learning experience about Australia’s wartime history.

To finish the camp on a fun and relaxed note, students enjoyed some supervised free time exploring the Queen Street Markets before boarding the coach for home.

A Fantastic Experience for All!

We are incredibly proud of our Year 6 students for the way they represented our school throughout the week. Their behaviour, enthusiasm and willingness to take on new challenges made the camp a huge success.

Thank you to the staff who attended and supported the students, and to our families for preparing the children so well.

It was truly a memorable week for our Year 6 cohort!
