From the Year 4 Classroom

We’re over halfway through the term and there is a little under five weeks to go! The classroom is buzzing with energy as students continue to learn, create, and explore. It’s exciting to see their curiosity, enthusiasm, and progress as they dive into this term’s projects and activities.

Literacy: Our students are beginning to explore the wonderful world of animals through poetry. They have started by reading and analysing a range of animal poems to discover how poets use descriptive language, similes, rhyme, and rhythm to capture an animal’s unique qualities. Building on this inspiration, students will craft their own poems that bring their chosen animal vividly to life, describing its appearance, behaviour, and habitat in rich, imaginative detail. We can’t wait to see their creativity soar as they share their finished poems!

Here’s an example of what our budding poets are aiming for:

The Eagle by Alfred, Lord Tennyson

He clasps the crag with crooked hands;

Close to the sun in lonely lands,

Ring'd with the azure world, he stands.

The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;

He watches from his mountain walls,

And like a thunderbolt he falls.

Maths: Over the next few, students will be developing their confidence with division by one-digit numbers, using arrays to build strong conceptual understanding. Arrays allow students to see how a larger number can be split into equal groups, which is a key foundation for efficient division. These visual models help students understand why division works—not just how to follow steps.

Students will also begin to use their place value knowledge to divide larger numbers by a one-digit divisor. They will learn to break numbers apart into hundreds, tens and ones so they can divide each part more easily. This approach strengthens number sense and prepares students for more formal written methods.

To put all this learning into practice, students will solve real-life word problems that require multiplication and division. These problems help students decide which operation to use; apply strategies they have been taught and explain their mathematical thinking clearly.

Students are encouraged to continue to build on their accuracy and speed with which they can recall the times tables. Strong multiplication facts make both multiplication and division much more efficient. Regular practice, both in school and at home, helps students build automaticity, which is essential as maths becomes more complex.

We’ve included a few recommended websites below to help students practise and strengthen their times tables.

Top Marks Hit the Button

20 Card Dash (Multiplication)

Alternatively, students can roll two numbers using dice or flip over two playing cards and multiply the numbers together. The aim is to see how many they can answer correctly in 2–5 minutes, trying to beat their score each time they practise.

Religion: Students have engaged in meaningful learning experiences that explored the message of the Good Samaritan, helping them understand how Jesus teaches us to show love, kindness, and how to reach out and serve others. The students designed a Kahoot, which is a fun and interactive quiz game, to help their classmates review the key ideas from the story and show how the Good Samaritan teaches us to love and care for others.

Inquiry: We have begun an exciting new project in which students take on the role of travel agents. Their task is to research a chosen continent and create an eye-catching advertisement that includes the name of the continent, 5–8 countries within it, surrounding oceans, its hemisphere, and its climate zone. Students then select one country from their continent to explore in greater depth, recording details such as the country’s name, flag, capital city, population, geographical features, climate, and fun facts. Once the posters are complete, students will become ‘tourists,’ travelling around the classroom to read their classmates’ posters and record information in their own passports as they journey around the world.
