Learning Update

From Mr Collins 2-6

Literacy

This week, we have been completing our end of year assessments in both the reading and writing space. One major focus was put on the 6 areas of fluency in Reading; by breaking the process of reading fluency down into these segments, we were able to not only find areas of improvement, but also pinpoint the next step in each student's progress. A nice aspect to this time of the term is the conversations we are able to have with students whilst working through assessments and for them to be able to reflect on their own growth in learning.

Numeracy

Have your kids told you about Deal or no Deal yet? In class, we have been playing this game to engage in conversations about chance. Whilst playing, we have kept a record of every student's final takings. Once all students have had the opportunity to play, we will use the data to create various data displays before delving into range and the different methods of average (mean, median & mode). Not a bad game to possibly add to the cupboard at home!

From Mrs Lehre P/1

Our students are bursting with festive cheer! They’ve been busy creating collaborative artworks for our upcoming Christmas party and showed incredible strength last week by carrying in our 8-foot Christmas tree. We’ve had lots of fun decorating it, especially with help from our Playgroup friends, who joined us to make some beautiful ornaments.

We’ve also been unwrapping a new Christmas book each day and enjoying a fun learning activity to go with it. The Christmas spirit is well and truly alive at Raywood… although our Elf on the Shelf seems determined to keep us on our toes — on Wednesday he even stole all our chairs!

Wellbeing

This term, we’ve been revisiting the Zones of Regulation after working with them throughout the year. Over the past few weeks, we’ve noticed a few students speaking unkindly to one another, so we’ve been taking time to reflect on our feelings, practise using our strategies, and strengthen our respectful communication skills. We’ve also been focusing on what to do when we’re in different zones — for example, if a student is in the Blue Zone and feeling tired, we might use a movement break, a drink of water, or some deep breathing to help reset. We’re proud of how our students are growing in their awareness and kindness.
