Kitchen Garden

Our Year 5/6 students discovered that treasure doesn’t always sparkle, it sometimes grows beneath the soil! With great excitement, they harvested a wonderful crop of potatoes, carefully digging them out like buried jewels. Each potato was met with cheers and laughter as students unearthed the hidden bounty of their hard work in the garden.

Back in the kitchen, the freshly harvested potatoes became the star ingredient in a delicious cooking adventure. The students worked together to transform their golden spuds into soft, pillowy gnocchi – the students rolling, shaping and cooking with patience and pride. To complete their Italian-inspired feast, they prepared a rich, tomato sugo along with a vibrant, tangy salsa Verde bursting with fresh green flavour. The finishing touch was a warm, buttery garlic bread, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and irresistible.

The session was more than just a cooking class; it was a celebration of the full garden-to-plate experience. Students saw first-hand how care in the garden leads to creativity in the kitchen, and how teamwork and curiosity can turn simple ingredients into something truly special. The joy of sharing and tasting their handmade meal together was the perfect reward for all their efforts, with most of the students eager to recreate the recipes at home for their families. Our special helpers, Miranda, Nanna Sharon, Hayla, Anna and Romello were there to lend a hand and enjoy in the deliciousness with us.

Next week, we will be back in the kitchen with our Year 3/4 students, coming full circle from the beginning of the year to now, and we will make rhubarb and apple crumble, topped with vanilla ice-cream. Definitely another easy recipe to try at home!
