Careers

Hello Parents/Guardians and Community Members,
The past fortnight has proven to be another busy time in the careers office. Please see the summary of recent events and upcoming event details outlined below.
Narrandera Shire Youth Council
Skills & Industry Workshops
The recent Horticulture workshop under the ‘Where Do I Go from Here Project’ was another fantastic day for our students up at Narrandera TAFE.
On Thursday 4th June a group of our students were able to participate in a Horticulture workshop under the ‘Where Do I Go from Here Project’, organised and by our Youth Coordinator of Narrandera Shire Council Nyoka Prior. This was another fantastic day for our students up at Narrandera TAFE participating in hands-on learning about gardening and propagating skills, identifying weeds and managing pests to understanding plants and how to keep them thriving.
At the end of the day, each student got to take home their own terrarium and a herb garden they planted themselves, giving them the chance to continue growing their new skills at home. We wish to thank Nyoka Prior, for another amazing opportunity for our students as well as TAFE Teacher Kent for sharing his knowledge and passion with our students.
Narrandera Youth Council
Driving Lessons
We wish to encourage all our students who have their learners’ licences to engage in this amazing opportunity provided by Nyoka Prior Youth Coordinator of Narrandera Shire Council in making available sponsored driving lessons for the youth of Narrandera Shire.
We encourage all students to take up this opportunity to have paid professional driving lessons with Murray Hall.
TAFE YES Program
Welding
Last week, was the final week of the TAFE YES Program in Metal Fabrication and Welding for our students, who over the course of the past five weeks, have built their confidence and metal trade skills through project based, hands-on learning. With students working together to complete their final project a community bench seat that will be on full display in our school garden. Well done students!
This TAFE YES Program was organised by our TAFE Services Coordinator at Narrandera TAFE – Sheridan Scalli. Thank you Sheridan for all the advocacy and coordination in providing these opportunities to our school.
RIEP Workshop
Be A Health Hero Workshop Wagga Wagga Base Hospital & CSU
Our second group of students recently attended the unique and highly successful program called ‘Be A Health Hero’ program. This unique program was organised and funded by our Regional Industries Education Partnership Officer Stacey Suidgeest, in partnership with MLHD staff, CSU Staff and Three Rivers Health. The program enabled students to explore all aspects of health careers and provide hands on practical workshops in the areas of Nursing, Allied Health and Medicine.
Students really enjoyed this program and gained an insight into the hands-on skills and knowledge of the may local health professionals and information about the many health careers in our community. Students particularly loved the escape room activities which were both fun, educational and engaging!
SAFEWORK White Card
Construction Safety Courses – Wait list for Term 3
Any students who wish to be added to the White Card wait list are encouraged to come and see me in the careers office as I am hoping to confirm dates for another round of courses to be held in term three. The courses are completely subsidised by the Department of Education and so there is no cost for the course itself. However, the SafeWork Licence Card does have a cost of $30 for each student.
*All students will need to obtain a Unique Student Identifier Number to participate. I can assist students to obtain this online but will require them to bring in a photo of their Medicare card to obtain this USI. Or students can obtain this themselves by accessing the following website: https://www.usi.gov.au/providers/create-usi-student
University of Canberra Excursion
Last week our senior students had the opportunity to attend the University of Canberra Explore Day. Students were able to attend hands-on and informative workshops providing information about the many degree courses on offer at UC.
This was a fantastic opportunity for senior students to see university life and explore course options and learn all about what the University of Canberra has to offer. While it was a long day, I hope students enjoyed the opportunity and gained further information to support them with their career pathway planning.
Western Riverina Careers Expo
Leeton High School
Today our Year 10 group attended the Western Riverina Careers Expo at Leeton High School. This expo was an important opportunity for students to begin to gain important information in their exploration of future career aspirations and will hopefully assist students as they start the subject selection process for their senior studies, which will all be on next term.
Careers Expos allow students access to the many employers, tertiary providers, and organisations to explore careers opportunities, courses and discuss firsthand with industry experts all aspects of modern career and employment opportunities across the state and in our region.
I wish to thank our students for their engagement and positive behaviour while out talking to industry and tertiary representatives from across the state. Thank you Year 10!
Year 12 Careers Pathway
Interviews & University Early Entry are open for all Year 12 students
We have commenced our Year 12 Careers Transition Interviews this term and I encourage all Year 12 students to book in for their careers planning interview with me. These comprehensive interviews take a minimum of two lessons and are tailored to each student to ensure they have a clear plan and information for their transition to post school life.
Students who are looking at university pathways are encouraged to organise their interview as soon as possible so they can have guidance on the various early entry processes offered by each university and how they can respond to the specific requirements of each university and course they aspire to study. If parents would like to attend these meetings, they are welcome to reach out to the careers office to book an appointment after school hours. All parents and guardians are sent a summary of the meetings with their child if they cannot attend in person.
All Careers Events
All these opportunities are always announced to students at our morning assemblies, year meetings and in our newsletters. Any student or parent who has any questions in relation to these activities are welcome to contact the careers office for further information.
