In this edition of SchoolTV - Drinking & Alcohol
Alcohol is one of the most commonly used substances among young people, making it an important topic for families to address early and often. From the primary years onwards, children are exposed to messages about alcohol through social situations, media and online content. Starting age-appropriate conversations early can help build healthy attitudes, strengthen trust and make later discussions during adolescence easier and more effective.
As children grow older, curiosity, peer influence and increasing independence can increase the likelihood of experimentation. Research shows that strong family communication, clear expectations and positive role modelling are key protective factors in helping young people make safer and healthier choices.
This edition of SchoolTV explores the impact of alcohol on children and adolescents and offers practical strategies to help families navigate this important topic with confidence and care.

A Farewell Message
After almost eight years at Marian Catholic College, including the past five years with Thrive Psychology, I will be concluding my role as College Counsellor on 24 June.
As I reflect on my time within this community, I do so with immense gratitude. It has been a privilege to work alongside students, families, staff and external professionals in supporting the wellbeing, growth and success of young people.
One of the greatest honours of this role has been having the opportunity to walk alongside students during the challenges and triumphs of their school years. I have witnessed remarkable courage, resilience, kindness, perseverance and personal growth in so many young people. Whether supporting students through difficult times, celebrating achievements, helping them navigate friendships, family challenges, mental health concerns or simply providing a safe space to talk, each interaction has reinforced the importance of connection and belonging.
Schools are unique communities where relationships matter deeply. I have always believed that positive relationships are among the most powerful protective factor in a young person’s life. Students thrive when they feel seen, heard, valued and connected. I encourage all members of our community - students, families and staff – to continue investing in those relationships, as they often become the foundation for wellbeing, resilience, learning and success.
I would like to sincerely thank the many students who have trusted me with their stories, the families who have partnered in supporting their children and the staff who work tirelessly every day to create positive outcomes for young people. The dedication, care and commitment I have witnessed has been inspiring.
While it is difficult to say goodbye, I am looking forward to embracing new opportunities for growth and professional development. I leave with many cherished memories and deep appreciation for those who have been part of the journey.
I wish all the students, families and staff every success and happiness for the future.
