Fun with Heart Words

Our Foundation students have been busy becoming confident readers and mathematicians through hands-on learning experiences!

This week, students practised their Heart Words using a variety of exciting multi-sensory activities. From squishing and shaping words with playdough, to stamping letters and writing words in shaving foam, students used their eyes, hands and minds to help remember these important words. Learning through play makes practising literacy skills both fun and meaningful!

In Mathematics, students explored the concept of capacity in the sandpit. Using buckets, containers and lots of sand, they investigated what it means for a container to be emptyhalf full, and full. Through digging, pouring and comparing, students developed their understanding of capacity while enjoying collaborative outdoor learning.

Our Level 1 students recently enjoyed a fun and engaging Task Works Incursion as part of their Inquiry study. Through a range of hands-on activities, students explored the concepts of push and pull, as well as different materials and forces. They investigated how objects move, tested different materials, and discovered how forces can change the motion of everyday items. The interactive activities encouraged students to think like scientists as they observed, predicted, and experimented.

In Literacy, students have been learning about procedure writing. To bring their learning to life, they followed a step-by-step procedure to make their own delicious fairy bread. Students carefully followed instructions, gathered ingredients, and completed each step in the correct order.

This hands-on experience helped them understand the importance of clear and sequential instructions when writing procedures.

Our Level 2 students had a fantastic day exploring Rush HQ and Waverley Park as part of our “Happy, Healthy Humans” inquiry unit!

At Rush HQ, they challenged themselves with fun physical activities, while at the park, they enjoyed games and a picnic, all while connecting with friends and embracing positivity.

The trip highlighted how teamwork, movement, and kindness contribute to our wellbeing. What a terrific day!

Level 3

This week, our Level 3 students became scientists as they investigated which material would make the best insulator. Using their prior learning, students made predictions and developed hypotheses about whether paper towel, aluminium foil, or bubble wrap would be most effective at slowing the melting of ice. They then conducted the experiment, carefully observed the results, and compared their findings with their original predictions.

We have also been enjoying our daily Move Your Mind sessions.

These activities challenge students to think critically, solve problems, and work collaboratively through a range of engaging scenarios.

As part of our Inquiry unit, the Level 4 students visited Jells Park to conduct investigations into the local environment and community. Students explored different biomes and vegetation types, observing how living things interact with their surroundings. They also examined features of the local area, including recreational spaces and nearby retail and community facilities, to develop their understanding of how environments are used and valued by people.

The excursion provided students with an authentic opportunity to apply their learning outside the classroom, ask questions, gather information and make connections between their observations and our Inquiry studies.

The students represented our school wonderfully and should be commended for their enthusiasm, curiosity and positive behaviour throughout the day.

On Tuesday 9th June, students in Level 5 ventured out for our first excursion of the year to IMAX and the Melbourne Museum!

When we arrived at the IMAX theatre, we enjoyed our choc-top ice cream, popcorn or drink that was pre-ordered so we could relax with our 3D glasses and watch the movie - A Beautiful Planet

The space documentary highlighted a breathtaking portrait of Earth from space as captured by the astronauts aboard the International Space Station. Everyone was fascinated!

After a break at the park, we explored the Museum and concluded our day by viewing the ‘600 Million Years Exhibition’ learning about the plants, animals and environments of Victoria over time.

It was a very educational experience and a lot of fun!

Our Level 6 students had an absolute blast bringing their inquiry learning to life during an exciting excursion to the Melbourne Museum.

During an engaging education session, students explored how environmental conditions around the world create unique habitats and examined the impacts of both geological events and human-induced changes.

A highlight of the day was visiting the brand-new Our Wondrous Planet exhibition, where students journeyed through immersive Reef, Rainforest, Soil and Ice environments and discovered more than 850 incredible animal specimens. This hands-on experience helped them understand how living things adapt to survive in some of Earth’s most extreme environments. The adventure continued through the Dynamic Earth and Dinosaur Walk galleries, where students explored how our planet has changed over time.

From marvelling at glowing crystals to standing face-to-face with a real Triceratops fossil, students loved making connections between ancient history, natural disasters and the world around them today.
