At Carnegie Primary School, students learn across a broad range of curriculum areas that help them understand the world, think critically, solve problems, and communicate effectively.
One of the key learning areas is Humanities and Social Sciences (HaSS).
HaSS explores how people interact with each other and the world around them—socially, culturally, economically, and politically. At CPS, HaSS learning also connects with other curriculum areas, including Technologies (Digital Technologies and Design and Technologies) and Health and Physical Education, where relevant.
This helps create richer and more meaningful learning experiences for students. These learning areas encourage curiosity, creativity, and collaboration.
From the Victorian Curriculum, we include these learning areas in HaSS:
Within Humanities, students learn about:
Our teachers work collaboratively to design engaging, inclusive, and knowledge-rich learning programs using a carefully planned scope and sequence.
This ensures students build their knowledge and skills over time in a structured way. Learning is also intentionally connected across curriculum areas, with purposeful links to language and literacy to deepen understanding and strengthen engagement.
For example, students in Years 1 and 2 explore texts such as Iggy Peck, Architect and The Most Magnificent Thing before applying their learning in a Design and Technologies unit focused on creativity, problem-solving, and the design process.
Through these connected learning experiences, students develop strong literacy skills alongside deep knowledge, critical thinking, and the ability to make connections across their learning.
You might like to ask your child: “What subject are you learning about in your HaSS lessons this term?”
