Reading

This fortnight, Year 3 students have been developing their reading comprehension skills through exploring a range of non-fiction texts. Students focused on identifying the main idea and supporting details, helping them to better understand and summarise information they read. They also strengthened their comprehension skills by answering questions about the text and using evidence from their reading to support their responses.

Students worked carefully to improve their writing by checking for correct punctuation, spelling, and sentence structure, while also making sure their ideas were clear and well organised. In grammar, students explored base words and how they can change when prefixes or suffixes are added, such as the base word form in the word information

Inquiry

This fortnight, the Year 3 students began exploring new vocabulary related to maps and compasses. Students were introduced to what a compass is and how it is used. They learnt about the four main directions; North, South, East and West and used the phrase “Never Eat Soggy Weetbix” to help remember them.

The students also had the opportunity to use Google Earth, where they applied their compass knowledge and direction skills to explore neighbouring countries, continents and oceans surrounding Australia.

The focus then shifted to Climate. Students developed a strong understanding of what climate means and learnt about different climate zones, including equatorial, temperate, arid and tropical climates. They researched neighbouring countries and compared how their climates are similar to or different from Australia’s climate.

Social and Emotional Learning / SWPBS

This fortnight in SEL/SWBPS, the Year 3 students explored the importance of coming to school regularly and demonstrating our school value of responsibility. Students discussed how taking responsibility for their learning helps them grow, succeed and build positive habits. They engaged in thoughtful conversations with their peers and shared personal reflections on why they believe attending school is important.

The Cohort also celebrated Education Support Week. Students created appreciation cards for the many important adults in our school community, including our Administration team, Education Support staff, Librarian, Wellbeing team and Maintenance team. This was a wonderful opportunity for students to recognise and thank the staff members who work hard to support our students and school every day.

Special Events

Education Week

During this week’s special event for Education Week, Open Classroom took place where students had the opportunity to show their families what they have been learning in the classroom. Families were also able to support their child by working alongside them during classroom activities.

In the Year 3 cohort, students showcased their Information Reports to parents and carers. They worked hard on completing the final draft of their information report on their chosen animal. They revised and edited their work carefully in preparation for publishing in the following lesson.

District Cross Country

There is a great sense of pride in our year level for the five Year 3 students who represented the school at the District Cross Country event last Friday. Competing at this level was a massive achievement, and all students demonstrated great determination, perseverance, and sportsmanship throughout the day. Well done on representing Year 3 so proudly, and a big congratulations to Navil, who came second overall!
