Year 2 News

Reading
In Reading week 4, Year 2 students have been learning how to retell both fiction and non-fiction texts. They practised carefully reading and re-reading texts to identify important information such as who, what, why and when with Fiction books and using Subheadings to help them in Non fiction books. Students also used the pictures and by flipping back through the pages to help them remember key events and details when retelling a story or text in their own words. This work is helping students strengthen their comprehension and understanding of what they read.
In week 5, students have begun learning to understand why an author wrote a text. They explored different text purposes and practised looking for clues within the text to help identify the author’s purpose, such as to entertain and inform. Students discussed features, language and ideas in texts to support their thinking and build a deeper understanding of what they read.

Writing
In writing this fortnight, students have been writing factual sentences about an animal. They have been using boundary punctuation to write an informative paragraph about an animal. The students have focused on using full stops, capital letters, question marks and exclamation marks in their writing. Additionally, the students have been planning and starting to write information reports about their school bags. They have been writing down facts about their backpack and turning them into simple and compound sentences.
In handwriting in weeks 4 and 5, the students have been focusing on body and head letters and body and tail letters. They have been working hard and ensuring their letters sit correctly on dotted thirds.

“I wrote that lions have 250 bones in a factual sentence.” - Lucas, 2C
Maths
Year 2 students have been developing their addition skills and learning about different strategies to help them become more fluent and accurate when working with numbers. Students explored number bonds to 10 and then gradually moved on to larger numbers. While students were exploring these number bonds, they discovered patterns and the relationships between numbers. As the Year 2 students became more confident, they played games where they could apply the strategies they learned.

“I know that 13 and 14 are number bonds to make 27.” - Hussain, 2C
Inquiry
This fortnight in Inquiry, the students have been learning about the seasons and thinking about what the weather is like during that time, what clothes they would wear and what activities they could take part in.
The students have also been learning about locating places on a map and have had the opportunity to draw and make their own map of Craigieburn. The students used a key to create symbols for their map to clearly show locations including school, State Swim, nearby houses, the creek and roads.

Social and Emotional Learning / SWPBS
In Week 4, Year 2 students participated in a lesson about respecting all adults in our school community and understanding the important roles they play. Students discussed and explored ways to show respect, including listening, following instructions, being patient and using polite language with all staff members.
Year 2 students continued to learn about seeking help and they participated in lessons which helped them identify different types of problems and practise ways to seek help from trusted adults. Students learned how to explain a problem clearly and understand when it’s important to ask an adult for support.
AUSLAN
Over the past two weeks in AUSLAN, our Year 2 students have been revising breakfast foods and modes of transport signs. They practised recognising and correctly signing a variety of breakfast foods and drew and signed their favourite breakfast items. Students also learnt and revised transport signs in AUSLAN and enjoyed identifying transport signs within an AUSLAN story before the voice-over was played. These activities helped students build their confidence and understanding of AUSLAN vocabulary and communication.
