Year 1 News

Reading
In Reading in Week 4, students continued to learn about the skill of Inferring. They practised using clues from the text and their prior knowledge to read between the lines and make inferences. This involved students answering a range of questions about a short text to show their understanding of inferring. In week 5, the Year 1 students focused on features of a fiction text. This involved them reading a range of different fiction texts and identifying the characters, setting, problem and solution.

Writing
In Writing sessions the past two weeks the Year 1 students have been learning how to write Information Reports. They were given information about an animal and they wrote about the animal's appearance, diet, habitat and a fun fact. Students have also been practising the difference between incomplete (fragments) and complete sentences. This has involved students identifying the who and what in a sentence. They have also continued to diligently practise their handwriting.

Maths
In Maths over the past two weeks, the Year 1 students have been learning about the properties of 2D shapes. This has involved them identifying how many sides and corners different 2D shapes have, including hexagons, pentagons, rectangles, triangles and octagons. They have explored the difference between regular and irregular shapes and have been identifying the features of both. In week 5, the students began to look at 3D objects in the environment and identified if different 3D objects stack, slide or roll. Students were given a range of 3D objects to experiment with to find out whether they would stack, roll or slide. Students were very engaged during their learning and made wonderful connections between 2D shapes and 3D objects and their properties.
“A hexagon has 6 sides and six corners”- Rayan 1B
“An irregular shape is when the sides aren’t all the same” Elliot 1B
Inquiry
Over the past fortnight, the Year 1 students explored the topic of seasons and weather during Inquiry lessons. They matched pictures and objects to the correct season and discussed the different features of each one. Students also learned that seasons can look different in other countries around the world and shared their ideas about how weather and activities change depending on the season. Students also reflected on what each season reminds them of, including special activities, clothing, weather, and celebrations. They then used their creativity to design their own symbols to represent each season, showing their understanding through thoughtful drawings and ideas.
The students explored short-term weather patterns and learned about different types of weather. They enjoyed becoming weather reporters, presenting their own weather forecasts to the class using weather vocabulary and symbols. Students also discussed how weather can affect people in different jobs, such as farmers, builders, pilots, and lifeguards, and how workers may need to prepare for different weather conditions.

Social and Emotional Learning / SWPBS
During the past fortnight in SEL and SWPBS, the Year 1 students explored the importance of treating everyone fairly, kindly, and with respect. Through class discussions and activities, students developed their understanding of what fairness means and how it can look different in everyday situations. They shared ideas about including others, taking turns, listening carefully, and using kind words and actions.
Students also focused on showing respect to all adults at school and in the community. They practised using respectful manners, listening when adults are speaking, and following instructions responsibly. These learning experiences helped students build positive relationships and strengthen their understanding of how to create a caring and respectful classroom environment.

AUSLAN
Over the past fortnight in AUSLAN, the Year 1 students learned how to sign a range of shapes, including square, triangle, circle, cube, pyramid, and sphere. Students practised using the correct handshapes and movements while identifying and discussing different 2D shapes and 3D objects found in everyday life.
Students also participated in recap and revision activities to strengthen their understanding of previously learned vocabulary. They revised signs related to food, transport, shops, and places outside the house, building their confidence and fluency when communicating in AUSLAN. Through games, partner activities, and class discussions, students continued to develop their signing skills in a fun and engaging way.

Special Event
ES Week
During Education Support (ES) Week, the Year 1 students took part in special activities to recognise and celebrate the many staff members who help make the school a positive and supportive place. Students discussed the important roles that different staff members play within the school community and reflected on ways they can show gratitude and appreciation.
As part of the celebration, students created thoughtful letters and messages for the Education Support staff, Wellbeing Team, Administration Team and Maintenance staff. They enjoyed expressing their thanks through kind words, drawings, and creative designs, showing appreciation for all the people who help and care for them each day at school.
