Year 5/6 - Senior Unit

Over the past two weeks, our Year 5/6 students have continued to be actively involved in a range of exciting learning opportunities, sporting events and classroom activities.
Recently, students participated in the COBAW Interschool Soccer competition. All students represented the school exceptionally well, demonstrating teamwork, persistence and sportsmanship throughout the day. The girls team had a fantastic day of competition and should be proud of their efforts, while the boys team experienced an exciting finish to the competition and have successfully progressed through to the next stage; Division. Congratulations to all students involved on the positive way they represented our school.
We also recently participated in the COBAW Winter Sports competition, with students competing in football, netball and softball. It was wonderful to see students encouraging one another and displaying excellent sportsmanship across the day. The football team faced some challenging competition but showed significant improvement and resilience throughout the event. In softball, both teams had a successful day, with the boys team making it through to finals and the girls team winning their grand final to progress to the Division stage. Our girls netball team also played extremely well throughout the day, while the mixed netball team experienced outstanding success, remaining undefeated and progressing through to Division. We wish all progressing teams the very best for the competitions in July.
A HUGE thank you to all the parents who have supported our Interschool Sports competitions over the past few weeks. Thank you for giving up your time to support the students, coach and umpire.
This term, some of our students also had the opportunity to participate in a research project conducted by researchers from Melbourne University. The study investigates how school playgrounds can best support children’s wellbeing, independence, social connection, engagement and connection to nature. We look forward to hearing more about the findings from this important research.
In Literacy, students have wrapped up their poetry unit by creating impressive anthologies showcasing a range of poetry styles and figurative language techniques explored throughout the term. Students should be very proud of the creativity and effort demonstrated in their final collections. We have now begun our informative writing unit, where students will continue developing their research and writing skills while exploring different extreme weather events. Students also participated in National Simultaneous Storytime, where we enjoyed reading Luna Roo the Kangaroo Baller and completed a range of comprehension activities linked to the text.
In Maths, students have been exploring all things data and graphing. They have been identifying different types of data before collecting, representing and analysing information in a variety of ways, including digitally. Students are now beginning to explore inverse operations and further develop their multiplicative thinking skills.
In Inquiry, students have continued investigating how extreme weather events shape Earth’s surface. Through hands-on investigations, flood modelling activities and drawing detailed diagrams, students have been developing their understanding of the impacts of these natural events.
Reminders:
Home Learning tasks are due this Friday, 29th May. Please encourage students to bring completed Home Learning books back to school.
Over the coming weeks, students will also be participating in 800m and 1500m trials in preparation for upcoming athletics events.
Finally, we would like to remind families that students should be wearing the correct school uniform each day, including navy school pants.
