Music

Are you interested in coaching our school rock band?
Our current parent volunteer who coaches our Year 6 band will be leaving us at the end of the year so there is an opportunity for an enthusiastic parent who has experience with bands and a WWCC to take over in 2026 or even start a Year 5 band this year! If you would like to know more and potentially come and see a rehearsal in action, please email Erica.Pringle@education.vic.gov.au or Kristie.Ferguson@education.vic.gov.au.
Arts Ambassadors
A big shout out to Olive and Felix our Arts Ambassadors for jumping into action and helping out at Art Club and Choir. They are also organising a school-wide Open Mic, open to any student who would like to perform something. More info to come.
Classroom Music
Year 3/4
Karate belts a plenty! Year 3/4 students have been testing for their Recorder Karate Belts and working at their own level, learning and using strategies to read traditional music notation and make their playing sound sweet. We are using coloured beads as karate belts that are thread onto a finger-knitted recorder strap.
For Sorry Day we read, listened to and sang Took The Children Away by Archie Roach and discussed how songs can tell important stories.
Year 2
Year 2 students have continued to play games that practice keeping a steady beat and clapping an ostinato throughout a song. This video is of some students keeping their steady beat in the game Apple Tree.

We have continued to play the recorder, enjoying playing the Autumn Song (from our assembly performance) and learning Rain Is Falling Down.
For Sorry Day we read, listened to and sang Took The Children Away by Archie Roach and discussed how songs can tell important stories.
Year F/1
F/1 students have continued to sing and play instruments and games that explore the musical elements. We have been using our listening skills in the game Button You Must Wander. You could play it at home! Substitute “Button” for whatever you are passing around.
Button you must wander, wander, wander
Button you must wander everywhere
Bright ears will find you
Sharp ears will find you
Button you must wander everywhere
Wanting to purchase a recorder for home?
There are lots of places online to buy a recorder, good and bad quality, so just make sure you are buying an instrument, not a toy. The following are budget-friendly options of good-enough quality for beginners:
Yamaha recorders

Angel recorders

TPS Choir
Our choir will participate in the Boite Schools Chorus again this year and students are excited to learn the songs and learn about Timor-Leste.
T.I.M.E (Thornbury Instrumental Music Experience)
T.I.M.E is the team of independent instrumental teachers at TPS. We are lucky to have wonderful and experienced instrumental teachers who offer piano, ukulele, guitar, drums, singing, strings (Violin, viola, cello), woodwind (clarinet, saxophone and flute), brass (trumpet and trombone). Students come out of their regular class for these lessons and have various performance opportunities throughout the year. If you would like to find out more about the instrumental program or sign up, please read the information in this form https://forms.gle/VMT5RLSTfncGYMAU7 or contact Justin justin.fermino@gmail.com.
