STEP Day
Northern Deanery Mass
Sixteen Year 10 Assistant Catechists and Year 11 Lasallian Youth Leaders represented O'Connor at the Northern Deanery Mass at Tenterfield on Tuesday 20th May joining with students from St Joseph's primary school Glen Innes and St Joseph's primary school Tenterfield as well as local parishioners and staff from Armidale Catholic Schools. The Mass was held as part of the Armidale Diocesan Jubilee Year of Hope celebrations, and marked the first time that students from our school celebrated Mass at St Mary's Church Tenterfield. All students represented the school with pride and were struck by the enthusiastic singing of the Tenterfield and Glen Innes children during the Mass, as well as the great lunch that was put on after Mass. Thanks to our Lasallian Youth Minister Joe Schmude for coming along for the day!

Victory and Growth: A Promising Start for Our Chess Team
Since commencing weekly meetings during Break B on Mondays, the 2025 OCC Chess Club has seen steady growth in both membership and skill. Students have been actively engaging in practice matches and preparing for the NSW Country Secondary Schools Chess Competition (North West Region).
The team made an outstanding debut on April 9th, achieving a clean sweep in Round One by winning all four online matches against Manilla Central School. Congratulations to Will Kentwell, Isaac Hayes, Archer Colvin, and Nathan Andrews for their flawless performances. Special recognition also goes to Charlie Streeting, Ruby Krug, Kimi Jordan, and Michaela Houllis, who participated in friendly online matches with other Manilla Central School students, gaining valuable experience.
Round Two, held on May 15th, presented a tougher challenge against The Armidale School (TAS), a strong and seasoned opponent. Despite the team's best efforts, OCC was unable to secure a win. Isaac Hayes earned a well-deserved draw, while Will Kentwell narrowly lost a closely contested match. Nathan Andrews and Kimi Jordan also put in commendable efforts against more experienced players, gaining insights that will support their continued growth.
In addition, Charlie Streeting, Ruby Krug, Michaela Houllis, and Azzie Saxby represented OCC in friendly matches with TAS students, contributing to the team’s development and demonstrating excellent sportsmanship.
The Chess Club continues to grow in both enthusiasm and expertise. We look forward to upcoming events, including local matches at NEGS later in Term 2.
