This term, our Grade 5/6 students have been investigating the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788 and the profound effects it had on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Through historical inquiry, students explored why the First Fleet was sent to Australia and how British colonisation shaped the early development of the nation. Using a range of sources, they examined the impact of settlement on Indigenous communities, including changes to traditional ways of life, loss of land, disease, and the beginning of resistance to colonisation.
This term, our Grade 5/6 students have been diving into the world of angles as part of their Mathematics learning. In line with the Victorian Curriculum, students have been learning to estimate, measure, and construct angles using degrees, as well as identify and classify different types of angles such as acute, obtuse, right, straight, and reflex. They have explored how angles are used in everyday contexts—from road signs and architecture to sports and art—and applied their understanding to solve real-world problems. Students have also used protractors to accurately measure and draw angles, developing precision and confidence in their mathematical skills. Through hands-on activities, group tasks, and engaging investigations, students are discovering that angles are all around us—and that maths is not just numbers, but shapes, space, and creative thinking too!
These two weeks in SEL, our Grade 5/6 students have been focusing on developing self-awareness and self-regulation strategies to support their emotional wellbeing. A key part of this learning has involved practising belly breathing—a calming technique that helps students manage big emotions by slowing the breath and steadying the body. Through guided activities and class discussions, students have explored how emotions can affect their thoughts and behaviours, and how techniques like deep breathing, mindful pauses, and movement breaks can help them reset and refocus. These strategies not only support students in managing stress and anxiety but also help build resilience, empathy, and respectful classroom relationships. We’re proud of the way students are applying these tools both in and out of the classroom to support their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of others.
Our Grade 6 students recently took part in a valuable transition program delivered by Hume Youth Services, designed to support their journey from primary to secondary school. The program focused on building confidence, addressing common concerns about high school, and developing practical strategies for a smooth transition into Year 7. Through engaging activities, discussions, and team-building exercises, students explored topics such as making new friends, managing timetables, handling peer pressure, and navigating new environments. They also had the opportunity to ask questions and share their hopes and worries in a safe, supportive setting. Aligned with the Victorian Curriculum’s Personal and Social Capability strand, this program helps students strengthen their emotional intelligence, resilience, and decision-making skills as they prepare for the next exciting chapter in their educational journey. We're incredibly proud of the way our students are approaching this transition with maturity and enthusiasm.
