Learning Specialists

From Bookworm to Bulldogs Fans

Growing up in NSW, AFL wasn’t really on my radar. But this year, that’s changed thanks to passionate Year 3/4 teacher Jess McKee and the wonderful students in the Bulldogs Reading Program.

Through this program, I’ve seen not only some incredible book reviews—like James B's, which took out the April award (read more below)—but also an AFL team showing genuine care and commitment to literacy and learning. It’s been a joy to witness students engaging so thoughtfully with their reading, encouraged by the support of the Western Bulldogs.

Last Friday, we had the opportunity to visit the newly revamped Whitten Oval for the Captains' Run. Students kicked the footy on the field, explored the museum, and got to meet some of the players. It was a powerful reminder of how community partnerships can inspire students in meaningful ways.

And on Saturday? I found myself watching the game, throwing my support behind a team that’s throwing theirs behind our students. Go Doggies!

Cristiano Ronaldo by George Maudsley

Cristiano Ronaldo by George Maudsley is a compelling, kindhearted, and factual biography about the champion soccer player, Cristiano Ronaldo. The book follows Cristiano from being a skinny kid who adores football and dreams of playing in huge stadiums packed with fans, to becoming an amazing soccer player who has nearly won everything there is to win, including the Ballon d'Or, Golden Boot, Premier League title, La Liga title, World Cup, and more. He is a true champion. “And Ronaldo scores again!” I selected this book because of its unique front cover with symmetric features, and it didn’t disappoint. It was a real page-turner that I really enjoyed reading. It was great for passing the time when I woke up early in the morning and after school. I highly recommend this book to sports lovers who are looking for an inspiring read aged around 9-15 years old. I rate this book a solid 9.4/10.
