Year 3/4
Celebrating Learning
It seems hard to believe that we are halfway through Term 1! Students have well and truly settled into routines and rhythms of each classroom, and it’s great to see so many students starting the school day on time with their schoolmates! We appreciate your support in setting your child up for success.
Just a quick housekeeping note - please ensure your child is wearing sunsmart clothing; they need to have covered shoulders and a hat that shields their face from the sun effectively. They are also strongly encouraged to bring a refillable water bottle to school every day.
Curriculum focus
In Mathematics, we continue to develop our understanding of Place Value. Students are exploring the rules for working with odd and even numbers, and practising rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000. Students have been working on open-ended tasks that enable them to use their problem-solving and reasoning skills, and to articulate their thinking using shared maths language.
In Writing, we are revisiting persuasive texts, and writing pieces that convince the reader that one thing is better than another. We are continuing to follow the Writer’s Process of seeding, drafting, planning, revising, editing and publishing.
In Reading, we have worked hard to create detailed summaries of picture books, by using the main ideas from the text, and putting these into our own words. We are also focusing on asking questions, and learning about“thick” and “thin” questions, and the importance of each kind. The attached poster shows some of the key differences.
In Unit Focus, we are progressing with our First Contact Unit. Our lessons looked at the concept of “Terra Nullius”, or nobody’s land, and have created some beautiful drawings of what this Country might have been like prior to colonisation. The photos show images created in Unit Focus on half of the page, which will be completed in the following weeks with an image of what the land looks like now. These will be accompanied by discussions on what makes Country sick, and what we can do to help.
Photos show summaries of picture books by Beatrix, Oliver and Aoife.
