Year 8 Learning Expo

Check out the awesome work our Year 8's are producing

The Discovery Learning Team are very excited about the upcoming Expo of Learning that will occur on Tuesday 26th March from 12:30 – 1:30 around classrooms 31 – 33.

This term has seen eight different projects take off as we have approached learning through hands-on activities and foundations of understanding.

This week we have seen students doing a variety of things within the projects.

· In Entrepreneurship - the students have pitched their business model and plan in a Shark Tank situation. It was great to see them show their prototype ideas and explain their thinking as they presented to our very qualified ‘sharks’!

· The Game Design project - students have completed their rulebooks after some practice in procedural writing, and are busy working on game pieces and designs, crafting and printing in both 2D and 3D!

· The Fantastic Fabrication tasks - have been using servers and neopixels controlled by microbits! They have made a variety of objects that flash and move as a result of their clever use of these tools. Things such as an exo-skeleton, hats, robot arms and a neopixel sword with game handle have appeared!

· The Music and Identity class - have been choreographing and working on the production of a combined drama and music item. They had a wonderful excursion to the Araluen Cultural Centre to see how theatre works behind the scenes.

· Our Site Management team - have been getting around visiting a number of sites to see the connections between the success of site management with a business. Their time at the tip this week was a highlight for them.

· The class working on the architecture and maths of the new Discovery Learning Centre - have been designing plans for their ideal learning space and making scaled models of their spaces. They frequently get to walk around the perimeter of the new building and see how it is developing.

· The Medieval Influencer class - are completing their research about a person of influence during Medieval times, and are getting their artefacts ready to reveal all they have learned about Medieval times.

At the moment we are planning how the Discovery Learning program will grow and develop in the coming terms, with the excitement of moving into the new building getting closer.

Thank you for your continued support of St Philip's as we go forward and continue to improve the teaching and learning practices and improve the learning outcomes of our students.

Fantastic Fabrications

Fab (Year 8 Discovery Learning) has gotten off to a flying start with students making a guided hat project with neopixels followed later with their own project design using servers and neopixels controlled by microbits. Here are some pics showing progress so far:
