Term 1

Level 6

The Level Six team extends a warm welcome to GWPS families, new and old. We hope everyone is looking forward to another fabulous year of learning.  Since our return to school, it has been wonderful to see so many familiar faces in addition to the new families we are welcoming into our community.  As a team, it is our great honour to journey with and guide your child through their final year of primary school.  Year Six is a year level that comes with its own unique experiences and challenges. Our days are filled with opportunities to explore different passions, stretch the imagination, build leadership traits, participate in a range of events and celebrate our achievements.

This year, our highly capable Level Six team consists of six team members. Four of our team members are existing GWPS teaching staff, who may have already worked with your child in some capacity across the school.  Mrs Angelique Shmerling (Teaching and Learning Leader) is teaching 6A. Mr Robert Lou (Assistant TaLL) is teaching 6B. Mrs Kylie Bailey (Data Literacy Leading Teacher) and Miss Parveen Kaur are teaching 6C and 6D respectively. In addition to this, we welcome Ms Rebecca Parish and Mr Jonathon Pereira, new members of our teaching staff, who are teaching 6E and 6F. Collectively, the Level Six team will bring many years of teaching experience, passion and knowledge towards educating our students. Please read below for a more detailed introduction of each team member.

Meet Mrs Shmerling (6A)

Hello! My name is Angelique Shmerling, and I am very excited to be part of the Year Six team this year. This is my seventh year as a teacher, having taught at another school for four years prior to joining the GWPS family in 2022. You may recognise me as Miss Gabriel, teaching 1B last year, and 6D the year prior. Clearly, I couldn’t stay away from the Year Sixes for long! I am passionate about teaching and learning languages and speak three (including English). I love baking sweet treats and going for long walks with my three-year old cavoodle, Ollie. I can’t wait to support 6A learners through their very special and important journey during their final year of primary school.

Meet Mr Lou (6B)

Hi everyone, my name is Robert Lou and I have the pleasure of teaching 6B. 2024 will be my sixth year as a primary school teacher and my sixth year as a part of the Glen Waverley Primary School family. I have been looking forward to this year, as I have taught many of the students when they were in Year One in 2019. So far, I can already tell that 6B are a very enthusiastic, passionate and energetic group.  As an educator, I love mathematics, science and digital technology, as they were my areas of interest when I was in school. Outside of school, I like to spend my time cooking, socialising with friends, playing video games, viewing films from a range of cultures, and collecting Magic the Gathering trading cards. If your child has any interest in these areas, please encourage them to have a conversation with me! If you see me around the school grounds, feel free to come and say hello!

Meet Mrs Bailey (6C)

Hi wonderful Level 6 Families! My name is Mrs Kylie Bailey and I have the absolute pleasure of teaching 6C this year. I first began teaching here at Glen Waverley Primary School in 2011 and have enjoyed teaching in numerous roles throughout the school. My house is very full, with my husband, two beautiful girls, who are in Year 1 and Grade 4, four gorgeous bunnies, three cockatiels and most recently our puppy, Charlie! For those of you who are not aware, Charlie will be hanging out in 6C this year. I love to read, have a green belt in karate and enjoy experiencing other cultures through meeting new people and travelling to different countries. I really look forward to the coming year and seeing the learners in 6C flourish and succeed as lifelong learners!

Meet Miss Kaur (6D)

Hello everyone! I'm Parveen Kaur, the proud classroom teacher of 6D. I've been sharing my passion for learning with students for over a decade now, starting this fulfilling journey back in 2007. Interacting with young minds is where I find my true joy, and I've cherished every moment of it. I am looking forward to this year, discovering the mind-blowing capabilities of our Year Six students. When I'm not busy inspiring the next generation of leaders, you'll likely catch me exploring new cafes or getting lost in captivating podcasts because, let's face it, nothing pairs better with a latte than a side of intellectual banter—I like to think of it as brain food with a dash of humour! I look forward to working closely with you in 2024.

Meet Ms Parish (6E)

Hello all! I am Rebecca Parish, and this year I am lucky to be teaching 6E. This is my first year at Glen Waverley Primary School, and I am looking forward to being in a Grade 6 team again with all the exciting learning and experiences we get to do together. The learners have already shown their passion and interests, and I am delighted to be working with this group in their final year of primary school. Outside of school I enjoy camping, hiking, baking, making crafts and spending time with friends and family. I have also started taking a pottery class which has been messy but fun! I look forward to meeting you and working together to support your child.

Meet Mr Pereira (6F)

Hello Year 6 Families! My name is Jonathon Pereira and this year I will have the pleasure of teaching 6F. I will be going into my fifth year of teaching, with this being my first year at Glen Waverley Primary School. I look forward to introducing myself to you all throughout the year. The students of 6F have made me feel very welcomed in my first few weeks and it makes me excited for the educational experiences we are going to share in 2024. As an educator, I am big believer in building on students’ strengths and interests to best support their own learning journeys. Outside of the school yard, you will most likely see me inside the gym, riding around Melbourne on one of my bikes or parked outside a cafe consuming coffee until my heart’s content. If you see me around GWPS please feel free to come say hello!

In addition to our teaching team, in the classroom we will be supported by the incredibly experienced Targeted Student Learning (TSL) teachers, and our dedicated Education Support team. The Level Six team looks forward to connecting with families during our various school events. Our upcoming ‘Getting to Know You Interviews’ will help form a critical part of the Home/School Partnership and set your child up for success.  Please keep your eye on Compass for any notices or information regarding the interviews. As always throughout the year, we encourage you to contact us if you have any queries regarding your child’s learning or wellbeing.

We are looking forward to a successful year ahead.
